Excellent, Convenient Explanation of the Point Names.

This book is what it claims to be. It is not there to teach you how to use the points/caves, its there to teach you about the meaning of the names of the points. Learning acupuncture areas as points on a line is a huge mistake, if you learn them by their names, you in most cases, have already begun a relationship with something beyond a point on a line. Modern TCM folk may not care about the meaning of the names because they are practicing a Maoist invented herbalized form of acupuncture.

In 1919 American Communist Party member Benjamin Gitlow was arrested for distributing a "Left Wing Manifesto," a publication inspired by the Russian Revolution. He was charged with violating New York's Criminal Anarchy Law of 1902, which outlawed the advocacy of any doctrine advocating to the violent overthrow of government. Gitlow argued that the law violated his right to free speech but was still convicted. He appealed and five years later the Supreme Court upheld his sentence by a vote of 7-2.

Throughout the legal proceedings, much attention was devoted to the "bad tendency" doctrine the idea that speakers and writers were responsible for the probable effects of their words which the Supreme Court explicitly endorsed in its decision. According to Justice Edward T. Sanford, "A state may punish utterances endangering the foundations of organized government and threatening its overthrow by unlawful means."

More important was Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes' dissent, in which he argued that the mere expression of ideas, separated from action, could not be punished under the "clear and present danger" doctrine. As Holmes put it, "Every idea is an incitement" and the expression of an idea, no matter how disagreeable, was protected by the First Amendment. While the majority disagreed, it also raised and endorsed the idea that the Bill of Rights could be violated by neither the federal government nor individual states an idea known as "incorporation" that was addressed for the first time in this case.

In recreating Gitlow, Marc Lendler opens up the world of American radicalism and brings back into focus a number of key figures in American law: defense attorney Clarence Darrow; New York Court of Appeals justices Roscoe Pound and Benjamin Cardozo; Walter Pollak of the fledgling ACLU; and dissenting justices Oliver Wendell Holmes and Louis Brandeis. Lendler also traces the origins of the incorporation doctrine and the ebb and flow of Gitlow as a precedent through the end of the Cold War.

In a time when Islamic radicalism raises many of the same questions as domestic Communism did, Lendler's cogent explication of this landmark case helps students and Court-watchers alike better understand "clear and present danger" tests, ongoing debates over incitement, and the importance of the Holmes-Brandeis dissent in our jurisprudence.

Alongside William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld and Mitch Epstein, New York–born and bred Joel Meyerowitz is one of the most important representatives of the New Color Photography movement of the 1960s and 70s. This retrospective traces his entire oeuvre, from his street photography to his light experimentations made during "the blue hour" in Cape Cod, and includes famous series such as Cape Light, After September 11: Images from Ground Zero, Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks, in addition to the artist's much-loved early work―his first trip to Europe in 1967, and his concurrent transition from black and white to color―which has been much less widely published. Though Meyerowitz admired Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, and shares their uncanny ability to grasp a human being on the street as both an individual and a representative of a larger social context, his handling of space and composition consciously differs from that of his idols, his framing less synchronized, the moments he captures, interestingly, less perfect. This square hardback volume compiles the artist's iconic images, and is an essential addition to any photography book collection.

About the Author

Joel Meyerowitz (born 1938) is an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the world. The New York native began photographing the streets in 1962 and by the mid-60s became an early advocate of color photography who was instrumental in transforming a general resistance to color film into an almost universal acceptance.

Editing, typography, design, image quality... poor.

This book is irritating to read. It seems that no one proofread or edited the text. The typography is bottom-notch. Hyphens are used as em dashes. Acute accents (or primes) with spacing issues are used in place of apostrophes. Quotation marks aren't contextual in multiple instances (they appear backwards). The line length is too long to be read with traditional pleasure, and it's Helvetica. The design of the book is pretty standard and generic. Why is black text used on pages 85 and 149? It doesn't read well or look nice. And the gray of page 85 looks cheap. What ever :-) These things were minor (initially).

Casually flipping through the pages, the images look pretty fine. But when I got to page 114, I could see the pixellation in the photo with the book in my lap (about a foot-and-a-half away from my eyes). I put the book up to my face and was amazed. I can't recall seeing film photographs reproduced so poorly in a serious photography book. From there I looked more closely at the image quality. Very noticeable pixellation is seen in the images on pages 144 and 145. Pixellation is especially noticeable in the high-contrast areas of images on pages 154, 155, 158, 168, 169, 177, 181 (wow — see the mechanic's arms), 183, 190, 191, and 193.

Most photos look fine at a distance (and on close inspection). And I originally didn't see the poor image quality on pages 32, 38, and 45. But this is a photography book — a self-proclaimed retrospective, at that — and I don't think above-average image quality is too lofty of an expectation.

I just noticed that "Massachus[e]tts" is misspelled on page 155. There are other instances of errors, though I'm not going to read through the text to find them again.

Any way.

This book makes me wonder if in addition to using rangefinders and large-format cameras, did Joel Meyerowitz also use a 2-megapixel digital camera. Yes, some images are reproduced that poorly. But, the pixellated photos are from all the decades covered in this retrospective. So of course, film photographs have simply been reproduced poorly. And I may have been more forgiving if the text and design showed much evidence of care. But no. It all seems hastily assembled. I am returning it.

I’m ashamed to say that after 20 years in New York I hadn’t heard of Joel Meyerowitz until I found this book. He is one of the founders of what we call “street photography,” long before it was fashionable. He was an employee of an advertising company, he saw Robert Frank’s photo book, The Americans, and figured he’d give it a try. Using a small camera, he started documenting the people on New York City streets, following that with a year in France and Spain, experiments with color and black and white photography, returns to New York City, and stays in Mexico.

This book is a retrospective, so you’re going to see a little of everything here. What fascinated me the most were his pictures of New York City in the 60’s, because I’m always keep to study the clothes and other norms of the time. Most of the people in his New York images look perfectly happy to be there, but then again, he wasn’t taking pictures in the Lower East Side, where things were lousy. I also noticed that almost all the photos contained no children, and that, I believe, is due to the old New York life. This city has always been popular with single adults, but it was never a good place to raise children. Until around 2000, once the families started growing, they’d move out to the suburbs. New York City kids always had a reputation of being spoiled. Meyerowitz’ photos include the World Trade Center Site, which I didn’t find that interesting. I would rather have seen more about the people working there, and I bet they’d have stories to tell. But his photos pf Mexico don’t get much attention here. I bet they show a lot of sleaze.

Street photography has gotten a lot of attention in the last decade. Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York documents the improvised fashions of the city’s people, many of them children, so we can see how the average age of a New Yorker has changed. Jamal Shabaz’ A Time Before Crack documents the style of Black Americans in the city in the early 80’s, though he didn’t publish it until 2005. I suspect that someone out there has a pile of photos they took in the city, way back when it was rough, and it’ll become a bestseller.

The subject matter of photographer Joel Meyerowitz is the serendipitous moment, the face in the crowd, the colors that rhyme or clash. Meyerowitz has an amazing eye for the unexpected happening. A wonderful collection.

Dr. Murk explains Jesus’ twelve signs, which precede His return to the earth. This includes a coming Great Global Earthquake, which causes massive tsunamis on all the coastlands. It may be a polar shift, which will destroy much of our world. Casualties from this worldwide mega-disaster will be beyond numbering. Ash clouds from scores of exploding volcanoes will cause the blackening of the sun and the moon and the disappearance of the stars. This is described by many Old Testament prophets, by Jesus in Matthew 24, and in Revelation 6:12-14. This begins the Day of the Lord when God reveals Himself to the whole world, bringing blessing for His family and the pouring out of His wrath on those who have rejected Him.

Communism, Nazism, and Islamism are all revealed in Bible prophecy in Revelation 6. Militant Islam as the Pale Green Horse will result in the destruction of one fourth of the world’s population. Jesus also warns of the appearance of false christs and false prophets who come at this same time doing miracles perhaps to help mankind pick up the pieces from the Great Global Earthquake. After Christ Jesus has rescued His people, Satan will take charge of the earth in the person of the Antichrist who will reorganize all men into a world government, the New World Order. These are just a few of the coming events predicted in the Bible and explained in this book.

A Different View of the Sequence of End Time Events

This is the fourth book in a series. It deserves reading mainly because it makes you think. The subject is end time events and is the author's view of the sequence and in particular what event will initiate the tribulation period of Bible prophecy. The sequence presented is not like that conservative Biblical scholars, such as Tim LeHaye, Thomas Ice, or Clarence Larkin. That did not bother me as I enjoy learning what different scholars believe and why they believe it. The author gives a lot of supporting references for each of his points of view. The book is very readable and well written.

The author sees as the first major event that signals the beginning of the tribulation period an attack by the enemies of Israel on Israel which is followed by a global earthquake, and all that goes with it, that destroys the invading armies. He sees the six seal judgments as being fulfilled in our time and the rapture taking place after the global earthquake when the Lord returns to save the remainder of Israel. The trumpet and bowl judgments then follow in the seven-year tribulation period which does not begin until after the rapture takes place.

The last part of the book then presents a picture of how the false religions will unite and have their own messiah who will have his "Day of Declaration" after the rapture. He will come in peace and unite the world to help them recover from the war and damage that has been caused by the earthquake. References there are to the work of: The Lucis Turst, World Goodwill, Aquarian Age Community, and Share International, all of which I have checked out and found that they do indeed talk about the coming "Christ"
which they are trying to prepare the world to receive. They name the person, Lord Maitreya, who is alive today. The various references list some of the miracles he is said to have performed. A website dedicated to information about the activities and teachings of this Lord Maitreya is: [...].
