Excellent translations

This is a very nice selection of Gogol's greatest stories and plays, capably translated by Christopher English. The translations read far better than other recent versions by Wilks (for Penguin) and Pevear and Volokhonsky (for Vintage). Pevear and Volokhonsky are fine translators, but their more literal approach works better for Dostoevsky and Tolstoy than it does for Gogol. Christopher English translates with a more flowing and rhetorical style that matches the satirical insanity of Gogol. "Diary of a Madman" reads particularly well.

Btw, Robert Maguire did the sterling Penguin Dead Souls, but to the best of my knowledge he never translated Gogol's stories.

Being in the world

This volume would be an excellent choice for anyone looking to get an introduction to Russian literature and Russian realism / existentialism more generally. For this reviewer, highlights include "The Government Inspector", and from the Petersburg Tales, "Nevsky Prospect" and "The Overcoat".

"The Government Inspector" gives a humorous look at corruption in the Russian provinces during the mid-19th century. Reading this play you’ll feel like the plot is something you’ve read or seen before and that’s probably the case, but Gogol was the first to write such a tale. "The Overcoat" as deals with a Petersburg bureaucrat and the one thing that makes his life worth living; a coat. "Nevsky Prospect" highlights two ways in which to deal with the reality of pursuing women romantically. It gives a detailed and unique perspective of two men lusting after two different women. One man’s approach ends in death, the other man’s a near death; fascinating to say the least!

Some readers may grow impatient with Gogol's plots, for they typically unfold at a slow pace. For patient readers, however, they'll likely find Gogol's plots thought-provoking in their underlying statements about perception and how much it relates to one's overall sense of being in the world.

Emphasis on Geometry

I like this book's clear and helpful prose a lot. The graphs and diagrams are well presented. Answers are provided for problems. No color, and a bit denser layout than in most elementary texts. It's not comprehensive, but does a good job hitting many important points, with an emphasis on geometry. If you expect to find all the dozens of trig formulas developed here, you won't.

This is really great for self-study, but you'll need some other resources.

I was hoping this book would be a fun extra book to use at home

My 6th grader is enrolled in HS Geometry. I was hoping this book would be a fun extra book to use at home. However, it seems he has already covered most of these geometry concepts. The Trig section, however, will be useful for us to add to learning. It is an easy to read book that guides the user through mathematical concepts. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are looking for preparation for a HS geometry course.

Awesome book from slightly dishonest seller

I am finding this book very helpful already. I had completed the companion volume on algebra and was disappointed to find that this one was out of print, so I purchased a used copy that was unmarked, according to the seller's description. Tuned out the first 30 pages had already been filled out so I'm not too happy with that merchant, but decided to keep the book anyway, since I couldn't wait to get started. Like the algebra one, this self-teaching guide is very interactive: explanations of concepts followed by questions with the answers following immediately. Very understandable and perfect for using alone. Anyone who missed out on an early education (like I did) and needs help making the leap to advanced math without a lot of background should definitely consider this book and the other (Practical Algebra, same author/publisher). They are working out great for me!

Dennis Coon is a publishing phenomenon and one of the best-selling authors in the field of psychology. His innovative instructional methods and student-focused style make his works perennial favorites among instructors and students alike. I loved it so much

I rented this textbook from Amazon for a General Psych class. I loved it so much, I really thought about buying it for myself. It's written in a conversational manner with good humor, so chapter-reading isn't a drudgery. And it covers quite a lot, even going into the benefits of meditation and dream-journaling, which I was pleasantly surprised to find! For a book that spans an already broad subject matter, I was impressed.

Though Fleming’s rhyming scheme is ambitious, it’s ironclad in its meter and well positioned upon the page. Young listeners will be chanting along almost immediately: “Four hungry babies fret, sulk, and pout. ‘Feed us! Feed us!’ the little ones shout. / ‘Hush, you little egg-crackers,’ Mama Bird coos, ‘and I’ll fly to the garden to find you more food.’” The countdown element is irresistible—the number of hungry chicks decreases right along with Mama Bird’s energy. Lil guy loves this book!

My son is almost 3. When this book came, he took it from me as soon as I opened it (as he always does when I get him a new book). He brings it to me all the time to read it to him, he carries it around with him everywhere. It's been with us to the grocery store and my dr appts. He absolutely loves this book, he counts the "chicks" as he calls them and tells me all about the broken eggs. He's big time into this book, I hope he likes it for a long time. It's adorable!

Good rhythm, my daughter loves it

We just got this book a few days ago, and already my daughter (age 2.5) has made my wife and I read this book at least 15 times. The book is about a mother bird's quest to feed her seven children. The books counts the number of hungry children at each step, records mama's food finding mission for one of them, and repeats, effectively counting down from 7 to 1. It has the standard repetition elements that small children and toddlers love, along with brightly colored and attractive pictures. The book has an excellent meter and rhyming scheme to it which makes it very attractive to younger children.

The only reason that it didn't get 5 stars is a consistent complaint of mine about children's books - they frequently portray the family unit in a very stereotypical and unfair fashion. After mama bird is done, it is revealed that daddy bird was sitting there the whole time without raising a feather. (The only thing missing from his pose in the book was a TV and a beer can). Frankly this consistently portrayed stereotype of the how the family functions is unfair to both mothers and fathers, not to mention the children who are learning from it. I don't want this review to focus on this since it's a larger problem so I'll end here, I just wanted to explain the "missing" fifth star.

A bit on the long side, with unusual flow.

Seven Hungry Babies is a relatively middle of the road counting story for toddlers.

The artwork is not particularly impressive (or lacking), though the bright primary colors should help to hold the attention of very young children. The quality of the book itself is on the better side of what I'm used to, and the pages don't rip too easily when my 2 year-old gets "grabby".

The flow of the story is a bit strange, in that some parts rhyme and some don't. Unlike most books for this age group, it isn't one where you can easily disengage your brain when reading it aloud.

I won't give away the shock ending here, but the story itself is pretty ho-hum, and has been done many, many times before (e.g. Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed).

If your kid really likes birds, I guess this is a solid buy. Beyond that, though, I wouldn't recommend it over any other book where you progressively count down.

As a World History teacher this is an awesome resource for my classroom!!I actually purchased two of these books and cut the timeline out of both. I had them both laminated and I hung them in my classroom. One side is an amazing timeline of world history which I love because you can see at any given date what is going on all over the world... not just in Europe or America. The other side has the major countries in Europe and their Absolute monarch's family trees. I was so excited when I found this book because it's absolutely what I was looking for! I have other posters in my room- but this stays up all year and is a useful tool all year!!

Eyepopping Hand Drawn Ancient foldout history timeline

This is a gorgeous document. Prior to the Millenium version, I had once before seen this chart about 16 feet long on a wall. It rolled up, when it came down off the wall, which would have been the only way to store it.

This version is beautifully folded into book form. It unfolds into the long chart, but then gracefully folds back up into the book cover.

The top time line is all or most of the people and events in the Bible. Beneath that are the lineages of major dynasties, beginning with the Tower of Babel: Phoenicia (or Canaan); Egypt; Chaleaea; Greece, and China, and branching to include, or entering new countries as they form throughout history, up through the year 2000.

Hundreds of tiny, detailed pictures in what I'd call "ancient earth colors," which would probably have been formed of natural dyes, abound.

The art seems very old. It was actually drawn in 1890, but in an antiquated style. See to appreciate.

the chapters are short and easy to understand. gives me time to get ready for other classes while being up-to-date with this one.

I looked forward to reading this book every day, and missed it on the days I didn't have time to read. It felt like a guilty pleasure to me because it was mostly fun, sexy, and light. My favorite part of the book overall was the first chapter. It's the one that stands out to me and is most memorable. It was fun, exciting, sexy, and really set the stage. It was also fun to read the striptease scene! The whole book would be cool as a movie but that scene in particular would be amazing!!!

An important book giving people permission to embrace who they really are sexually. Hysterical, Sexy and Deep! Worth the read!

What Melanie managed to flawlessly do is put together a book of stories that encompasses a range of experiences and emotions. There were some chapters where I found myself laughing out loud, and others where I really felt her pain. There was not a chapter was I did not feel something either for her, or the story being read.

What I feel Melanie does differently than other books in this genre, she takes her own personal experiences and shares them in order to help others. When Melanie reveals herself, I feel it gives others the opportunity to give themselves permission to do things they have always wanted to do, as well as having them understand that maybe the things they are desiring are actually ok and there should be no shame around what their desires are. What was conveyed to me, was we are all sexual beings and there is nothing wrong with that.

In a time where people are no longer getting married young, internet dating is how many people are meeting, and birth control has been around for over 30 years, we are still living with some antiquated ideas around sex. Melanie's book helps to smash some of those ideas and myths and gives both women and men permission to have fun, embrace their sexuality, and the freedom to talk about it.

One of my takeaways is despite being single, I have a right to a sex life and that if I am safe, and trust myself and my partner there is nothing wrong with my choices. If people are not okay with my choices, that is their "stuff" and not mine to carry for them or take on. If I am confident in my choices and experiences, it really does not matter what others say. I do not have to let their opinions impact me, or impact me in a way that I shame myself.

Why Can’t I Meet a Woman Like This?!?

Mel is a real, raw, really sexy author! Her writing style is refreshing, relatable and makes you feel like you’re there, hearing her stories first hand rather than reading them off the page.

This is an amazing read told from the woman’s point of view about her sexual “conquests” and the empowerment and pride women should feel by embracing their sexual desires. It not only eliminates the idea of shame or embarrassment that can arise during sexual encounters, but it also enforces the satisfaction we should get from going out there and “getting some”.

As a male still trying to figure out the conundrum that is women, this book was the perfect perspective with just the right amount of attitude, truth and sex that not only I could comprehend, but actually relate to. Each story had its nuances that made me feel connected, that delved into the intricacies of each relationship, whether it was a one night stand or an emotionally complicated connection. It was honest and forthright; it makes you feel comfortable and even confident to talk about our deepest and darkest desires, which is such a rarity, especially when describing our most intimate moments.

I desperately hope I get to meet the amazing author behind “Around the World in 80 Lays” and express the gratitude I have for this sincere piece of literature. This book spoke volumes to me and as best as I did to express my true feelings regarding these real life experiences, you need to experience them for yourself.

If you have ever felt insecure, unsure or lack confidence in the decisions you have made in your life…you need to read this book! It brings to clarity the control we have in our lives, it exemplifies the choice we have “to say YES when we want to say yes, NO when we want to say no”, but most importantly it presents us with the freedom to do what we want with whomever we want and be proud of that choice because THAT IS WHAT WE WANTED!

The author’s note was the perfect conclusion to the theme you so intricately entwined throughout your stories and it couldn’t be a more powerful expression of the self-assurance we all need to have in our sex lives!! There is NOTHING wrong with us! The world needs to hear this message and your voice has spoken!

This book consists of the most powerful NLP Techniques is full of good, positive information with viable advices and systems of accomplishing a better self. It covers different parts of the rudiments of NLP including in submodalities, rapport, mission, values, and perceptual positions.. It had a lot of practical applications those are understandable as well as completely doable. It is fully light on phrasing and rather gives exceptionally pragmatic activities to help the reader to disguise NLP. In addition to discussion on Hypnosis is a very interesting matter, thumbs up.

An excellent NLP book!

This is an excellent book for Neuro-linquistic Programming. I learn certain techniques that have been proven to be very valuable and useful on several levels. The author did a great job in writing this book. It flowed nicely from topic to topic and covered absolutely every powerful NLP techniques and concepts. If you want to transform your life and start achieving more, I recommend that you buy and read this book!

Get optimized, control your mind!

This book challenges us to have control over our minds. It teaches us to learn how to overcome our fears and be able to know who we really are. This gives us a clear explanation how NLP will really change our view of the world and our life. NLP looks for the answers in places where they are most likely to be found. This book teaches us that instead of trying to solve the problems, NLP strives to offer the solutions by observing successful people and their habits. Great way to renew our mind and live to the fullest.
