An Incredible book of the strength of human endurance

Thomas E. Gaddis has produced an absolutely incredible work! The story of Robert Stroud's life in prison - in solitary confinement, is thoroughly interesting, gripping and thought-provoking. The reader really gets to know Robert Stroud, and is left with a feeling of great respect and admiration for a man who, despite the absolute horrors of a life spent mostly in solitary confinement, was nevertheless able to develop his potential to become a world famous ornithologist and author.
Birdman of Alcatraz is a story of human endurance under monumental restrictions and difficulties. An immensely encouraging book, as it demonstrates the incredible potential in man to overcome enormous hardship and injustice, and the ability to rise above it all and make an highly respected contribution to the world.

The story of a man who was never defeated

Depicted in this book, not as the bizarre "Birdman" of legend, but as a real man with great courage, fortitude, and intelligence, Robert Stroud is seen as a man who, despite his 54 years of incarceration (43 of which were in isolation of one form or another) maintained a dignity rarely equaled. Even with the enormous obstacles in his way, Gaddisis was able to unveil many of the injustices shown to Stroud throughout his life in prison, the ways he struggled to keep his sanity, to go from a third-grade dropout to a world-renowned expert in the health and care of canaries to an old man who was not even allowed many of the sparse comforts afforded fellow inmates. Gaddis does not try to hide the violence in Stroud's past, yet he also makes it possible to view glimpses of the man that Stroud could have been. With the last words written only one year before Stroud's death, this book was able to lay open for public view not only one man's life but also many of the injustices and atrocities with which the history of the American prison system is riddled. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

An enticing biography...

... but perhaps not an accurate one.

All biography is nothing but lies. Even a biography based entirely upon facts will have to suffer for the interpretations that lie between them and the motivations that are used to frame them. As such, those who call this book compelling or farcical have missed the point.

We will never know with real accuracy who Stroud was any more than we will who Jesus was. As a dead man who did not have the advantage of having his entire life transcribed by witnesses and whose thoughts were not captured for posterity, with the exception of his own writings which seem to portray a man who felt victimized and who was likely a bit of a hypochondriac, we have little to go on.

Moreover, the inclinations and purposes of Mr. Gaddis are also mysterious. Based on his other works, we can fairly, I think, assume that Mr. Gaddis was a proponent of change in the American penal system. It shouldn't surprise me overly if he had spent time within it himself, although I have no proof, of course.

It is automatically clear upon a careful reading that the book is not accurate (in case the disclaimer in the front was not enough). This is clear from the ever changing and growing list of people permitted to exchange letters with him, despite the claim that he was only permitted to exchange letters with three people (it actually became entertaining to watch the list grow throughout the novel, sometimes approaching hundreds).

One interesting thing about the book, however, can be noted on pg. 207 of the 1989 Comstock edition, wherein it cites the forces that caused convicts to slowly, inexorably go mad. Insightfully, it mentions that these same forces were operating on the guards. This, if present in the original edition, significantly predated the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Lucifer Effect (both by Philip Zimbardo) which elucidated the role of these forces on the guards.

Despite these problems, it was an interesting book. To those who would like a clearly biased book describing one inmate's time in the prison system in the early 20th century, pick this up. Otherwise, feel free to read something else.

Thin, but useful

This little book is only 110 pages long, of which only 40 really concentrate on bow and arrow setup, tuning, and shooting; the rest is devoted to hunting, bow construction, and a bit of biographical info on Ferguson. And truthfully, it's not terribly well written. Ferguson's strength is as a bowman and teacher, not a writer. But those 40 pages contain a wealth of useful information distilled into almost everything the beginning barebow shooter needs to know.

More experienced bare bow archers may find a lot to disagree with here. For instance, Ferguson shoots only aluminum arrows, and thinks wood is just too variable and inconsistent. That alone will raise more than a few hackles. (Since this book was published, he's brought out his own line of carbon fiber arrows.) But even the most experienced archer will admit that there's a lot to be learned from an archer who can consistently place his shots the way Ferguson does day in and day out.

I have a few bones to pick with Ferguson over his conception of instinctive shooting. He claims that since people are very bad at a task requiring them to estimate distance in yards, it must therefore be impossible to shoot purely "instinctively." As anyone who has read Fred Asbell's books can tell you, that's a bit of a straw man argument. Instinctive shooters don't say to themselves. "Gee, that looks like about 27 yards..." any more than an outfielder thinks "that looks like about 30, maybe 35 yards" before throwing to second base. They just do it, relying on practice and instinct to throw the ball with a high enough trajectory to reach the baseman's glove. When Ferguson says the archer should "become the arrow," he's saying the archer has to internalize the the arrow's trajectory, just as the outfielder has to internalize the ball's trajectory. And obviously, that's exactly what proponents of instinctive archery a saying. In effect, Ferguson's technique is exactly the same as Asbell's or Sorrell's; he's just giving it a different name.

I'm returning to archery, having done a fair bit of recurve shooting with aluminum shafts and sights in the 1970s, and with a longbow and wooden shafts in the 1990s. I bought this book as a refresher in technique and tuning, and while thought I knew a fair bit about shooting barebow, I picked up more useful info from this book than I expected. I'd still recommend that the newcomer to barebow shooting start with G. Fred Asbell's Instinctive Shooting; Ferguson's book adds a different viewpoint, and a number of useful tips on tuning and shooting that complement the Asbell book.

A short but excellent book by the next Howard Hill

This book is a short and enjoyable read by a master that some would say is today's Howard Hill. Fellow Alabamian Byron Ferguson provides a clear description of his techniques of shooting the bare bow, as well as some excellent hunting tips. He relays a few good stories along the way.

The book is not very long, but Ferguson covers all necessary topics from equipment, technique, practice strategy, bow tuning, bow design, hunting equipment and hunting tips. in a few places, I would have liked just a bit more detail, and the black and white photos leave something to be desired. Those are the only reason I didn't give it the full 5 stars.

Must-read for traditional archery

I already owned the book. It was the first one I read on the subject of traditional archery, and it was and remains the foundation of my knowledge base for the sport. I think it would be helpful and a pleasure to read for anyone interested in traditional archery, at any level, so I purchased a copy from Amazon as a gift for a relative who was already versed in traditional archery. He has thoroughly enjoyed it. Of course, anyone familiar with the amazing Byron Ferguson would like this book. I haven't reached the point of becoming the arrow, and I don't know if I get that part, yet. Nevertheless, I highly recommend the book.

"Aryan," a word that today evokes images of racial hatred and atrocity, was first used by Europeans to suggest bonds of kinship, as Thomas Trautmann shows in his far-reaching history of British Orientalism and the ethnology of India. When the historical relationship uniting Sanskrit with the languages of Europe was discovered, it seemed clear that Indians and Britons belonged to the same family. Thus the Indo-European or Aryan idea, based on the principle of linguistic kinship, dominated British ethnological inquiry.

In the nineteenth century, however, an emergent biological "race science" attacked the authority of the Orientalists. The spectacle of a dark-skinned people who were evidently civilized challenged Victorian ideas, and race science responded to the enigma of India by redefining the Aryan concept in narrowly "white" racial terms. By the end of the nineteenth century, race science and Orientalism reached a deep and lasting consensus in regard to India, which Trautmann calls "the racial theory of Indian civilization," and which he undermines with his powerful analysis of colonial ethnology in India. His work of reassessing British Orientalism and the Aryan idea will be of great interest to historians, anthropologists, and cultural critics.

The profound knowldge of the author on Indology and Indo-European studies made his argument authorative. About the Author
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman is Professor Emerita and former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She has written six social work textbooks in multiple editions and numerous publications, articles, and reviews on social work and women's issues. She also has served on the Editorial Board of AFFILIA: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals including the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Kirst-Ashman has been a member on the Board of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and has served as a CSWE accreditation site visitor on various occasions. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin. She has been the recipient of both the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roseman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University Outstanding Teaching Award. She earned her BSW degree and MSSW degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked as a practitioner and administrator in child welfare and mental health agencies.

Grafton Hull is Professor Emeritus at the University of Utah College of Social Work. He founded and directed the College's BSW Program. He has 38 years of experience teaching at BSW, MSW, and Ph.D. levels. His practice experience includes work in human service agencies providing mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice programs. He holds a BS in sociology, an MSW, and a doctorate in education (counseling, guidance, and personnel services). Hull is the co-author of eight texts and numerous articles in social work journals. He has served on the CSWE Board of Directors, Commission on Accreditation, and Nominations Committee; and as a President of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD), from which he received the Significant Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. His biography is listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA.
