An excellent introduction to Strategic Management

This is one of my favourite strategy texts. At first, I found this book fairly heavy reading. However, once I got deeper into the subject, I found it very useful (especially when I was studying for an MBA). I believe that the text provides the reader with a good grounding on strategic principles on which to build more specialist knowledge of the subject.
The text covers all the key steps of strategy development including analysis, selection and implementation. For each step, Johnson and Scholes also provides a number of techniques (including, PEST analysis, Porter's Diamond, Porter's Five Forces, Value Chain analysis, SWOT, Cultural Web, etc).

Best study book in Strategy currently available

When being midway in my MBA Strategy course, I bought this book. I've never regretted it, and it continues to be one of my favorites. In fact, I have many times wished I had it as my study litterature, as the authors manage to get thru a number of subjects in sufficient detail to make it understandable. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject. If you're not interested in Strategy, skip this book, as they are very concentrated on making you understand and learn what they are discussing. In short, I won't trade this book for anything, it saved my hide a number of times during study and I keep getting back to it to refresh my memory or understand some finer points.

About the Author
K.A. Stroud was formerly Principal Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University), UK. He is also the author of Foundation Mathematics and Engineering Mathematics, companion volumes to this book. Dexter J. Booth was formerly Principal Lecturer in the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield, UK. He is the author of several mathematics textbooks and is co-author of Foundation Mathematics and the seventh edition of Engineering Mathematics.

Good Collection of Solved Problems

If you want a good basic collection of problems and your math book does not have solutions, this is a good place for you to start.
I wish more US textbooks published the worked solutions to all of their problems. While academic types tend to disagree with this approach saying that it diminishes the student's ability to reason, I must take exception to this.
Using good worked examples allows a math "consumer" (such as an undergraduate engineer) a way to build his/her confidence.
Those of us working in industry do not need proofs or generic problems picked for the benefit of the teacher (with "easy" numbers or solutions that fit easily into a template). Proofs are for applied mathematicians and those working in the more theoretical areas of engineering (or doing PHD work). We need good tools and mathematics (when intelligently applied) can help us.
This book tends to demystify some of the more arcane subjects for the reader.

Great for reviewing math relevant to graduate engineering studies

This book is the sequel to Stroud's excellent "Engineering Mathematics", which focused on the undergraduate engineer and the math that he/she should know by graduation. This book continues on with crystal-clear discussions of numerical methods, linear algebra including the singular value decomposition and its uses, linear programming methods, multiple integration, and partial differential equations, to name a few of the topics covered. Just because the mathematics is more advanced in this book does not mean that it is any less clear than its less advanced predecessor. Stroud continues his tradition of holding your hand and leading you through every question you might have about working various types of math problems. I particularly liked his coverage of partial differential equations and numerical linear algebra topics. That is because it is hard to find advanced math books on these topics that are not written by pure mathematicians. Thus most of those books have a tendency to go overboard on proofs and not focus on the practical matters engineers must know in order to solve problems. The only negative thing I can say about the book is that it references Stroud's other book on engineering math, "Engineering Mathematics", during some of the explanations, possibly putting you at a disadvantage if you don't have it handy. I highly recommend this book as a reference every engineer should own.
NOTE: For some strange reason this review of "Advanced Engineering Mathematics" is appearing under that book and also "Vector Analysis" by the same authors. This is NOT a review of "Vector Analysis", just to clear up any confusion!

sequel to the authors' Engineering Mathematics

This is the sequel to the authors' Engineering Mathematics. It follows the same programmed instruction approach which is so effective in their earlier book. Students who like this approach and the earlier book should also own this book. It delves into more engineering mathematics topics like Laplace Transforms, 2nd-Order Differential Equations and Complex Numbers. All in all, a good book to study engineering mathematics.

Great Read for Reluctant 3rd-5th Grade Boys

I work in a K-5 elementary library and have bought all the "I Survived..." books for my elementary boys - though plenty of girls have also enjoyed them. They love the "true story line", the fast pace of the books, and the fact that they are small chapter books. This is a high interest series that caters wonderfully to those reluctant readers.

I bought this for my 11 year old son who loves historic fiction. He has blown through each of the I Survived books as they have come out and loved each one. I love that he gets excited about reading them!! It can be hard to find engaging books for boys that aren't science fiction. My only wish is that they could release more soon!!

Souad T. Ali is Associate Professor at Arizona State University. She co-founded Al-Sudan Center for Democracy, Peace, and Civil Rights, and co-chaired the committee for peace in Sudan. A Fulbright Scholar, she is the author of A Religion, Not a State: Ali 'Abd al-Raziq Islamic Justification of Political Secularism (2009) and numerous articles. She is Director of Arabic and Chair of the Council for Arabic and Islamic Studies at ASU, and has been a Board member of the Sudan Studies Association, Head of Classics and Middle Eastern Studies at ASU, and President of the American Academy of Religion/Western Region. An advocate of women's rights, she was born in Sudan and lived in England.Stephanie Beswick was born in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, and spent her early years at Goda on the White Nile and at Bunziger on the Blue Nile. She received her education in Great Britain and the United States, earning her doctorate at Michigan State University. She has written a monograph on South Sudan, Sudan's Blood Memory, a pre-colonial history of the Dinka community. She has co-edited numerous books on Sudan, and has written approximately 30 journal articles. She is a past president of the Sudan Studies Association and a member of the Advisory Council for the Association.Richard Lobban received his PhD from Northwestern University, and is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and former Chair at Rhode Island College. He has written scores of articles, reviews, chapters and several editions of the Historical Dictionary of Sudan, and co-edited Sudan's Wars and Peace Agreements; Sudan Security; and The Historical Dictionary of Ancient and Medieval Nubia. His latest co-authored book is Libya: History and Revolution.Jay Spaulding was originally a medievalist by training, and earned a doctorate in African History from Columbia University. He has taught at Kean University, with several visiting professorships at Michigan State University. He is a founding member of the Sudan Studies Association. His publications include The Heroic Age in Sinnar and several co-edited volumes, as well as numerous shorter studies in the field of northeast African history.

Two Paths

Right now, at this very moment, you’re walking one of two paths through life.

Either

you’ve decided that what you most want out of life is within your reach, and you’re doing whatever you believe it
takes to get it

or

you’ve realized that what you most want is beyond your reach, and you’re trusting God for the satisfaction you
seek. You want Him. Nothing less, not even His blessings, will do.

If you’re walking the first path, your life is filled with pressure. Inside, where no one sees, your soul is weary. You see no way to step off the treadmill. Or life is going well, and you’re satisfied. But you sense something’s wrong, something’s missing. The pressure is still there.

If you’re walking the second path, you have hope. Your soul may be weary, your interior world may be filled with struggles no one sees, but you have hope. At times you rest. Something is alive in you; the desire of your heart is not smothered. You can taste freedom. And the taste brings joy. The first path is the Old Way. It involves a quid-pro-quo arrangement with God or, if not with God, then with the order in the universe, with the rules that make life work. If you do what you should, then you get what you want, either from a moral God who rewards good behavior or from an
orderly world that you effectively use. It leaves you in control of how things turn out in your life. The Old Way promises a better life filled with good things that make you happy.

But it never delivers, though it may seem to for a long time. The Old Way doesn’t work for one reason: You never keep your end of the bargain, not completely. No one does.

The second path is the New Way. In this arrangement, God first plants a desire in your heart, a longing that actually values His presence over His blessings; then He invites you to live out that desire, to abandon yourself to what you most want. It takes you out of control, but it sets you free. The New Way promises a better hope than the good things of life. It promises nearness to God, and it delivers, though not right away and often through suffering.

Most people live the Old Way all of their lives; most people who go to church live a religious version of the Old Way. It goes something like this: If you want good kids, raise them according to Christian principles. If you want a good marriage, understand a biblical model for marriage and live up to it as closely as you can.

If you want God to bless your ministry, follow godly principles of leadership. If you want to be emotionally healthy, practice spiritual disciplines and trust Jesus for your needs.

If you want close friends, learn to accept yourself and to be vulnerable, authentic, and forgiving.

People who live the Old Way believe the Law of Linearity, a law that states there is an A that leads to the B you want. Figure out what A is, do it, and you’ll have the life you most desire. The pressure’s on.

People who live the New Way believe the Law of Liberty. They come as they are. They do not bathe before they approach God. They come to God for the bath. They feel no pressure to change either their inner life or their outer life, but they desire change in both spheres. And they are eager to do whatever will create the opportunity for change, even if it means dipping themselves seven times in a muddy river or marching around an enemy’s wall for seven days and blowing trumpets. They live for the truest desire of their hearts: to know God and to enjoy Him. They do not live for a better life in this world. And when their life here is hard, when things fall apart, they most clearly reveal who they are. They’re citizens of another world who most want what this world can never provide. So they wisely indulge their deepest desire and trust God to reveal Himself to them. That’s the Law of Liberty.

Most of us are living the Old Way. Some of us can feel the emptiness it never fills. We’re working hard to make life work so we can feel good. The pressure’s on.

I really feel this book again is about grace and freedom...freedom to live in grace. And it could be life changing for some who don't have a firm grasp of the abundant life Jesus wants to give them! The really great thing about the 2012 edition of The Pressure's Off, is the eight week workbook that is included! Sometimes people can be put off by a book AND a workbook. Well in this new edition, you have both in one volume. This would be an excellent resource for a small group Bible study or could be used in a discipleship relationship.

You get no "psycho-babble" or "look within yourself" mumbo jumbo here...just clear, throrough, solidly biblical guidance to a life that honors and glorifies God...to a life that takes the pressure off you and teaches you to worship the One True God in spirit and truth with your life!

Dr. Crabb is a well-known psychologist, conference and seminar speaker, Bible teacher, author and founder-director of NewWay Ministries. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

The Good

This is a book you CAN judge by it's cover. What is more freeing than being a boy jumping in a lake in the middle of summer? The Pressure's Off.

How can a book endorsed by J.I. Packer, Brennan Manning and Cal Thomas, be anything but good? You can read other reviews about the content. I'll just say...

The content is great, the book well-written.
The eight-week workbook in the back makes this a terrific counseling/discipleship tool.
If you struggle with being "good enough," this book will bring all the freedom of an old-fashioned summer swim.
If you are willing to experience a wild God of freedom and unpredictability, read on!

The Bad

If you don't want to be convicted, don't buy it.
If you want to keep your god in a box, don't read it.

The Ugly

It felt as if the "Old Way" of keeping the rules to satisfy God was easier to understand than the "New Way" of living by abiding in Christ. Maybe I needed some more nuts-and-bolts kind of examples.

My favorite quote: "Only the mature value the blessings of presence over the blessing of presents."

I recommend this book without reservation, and that's not because WaterBrook Multnomah sent me a free copy of this book for the purpose of review as part of their Blogging for Books program. The $12 value isn't enough for me to sell my integrity. Now, if they had thrown in an incentive or two...

I recommend the book highly!

Dr. Crabb humbly shares his own struggles with depression and his tendency to want the good life of blessings from God ahead of a life of intimacy with God. And he shows us the biblical basis for living a life which is focused on intimacy with God. I appreciate his clear language.

About the Author
The husband and wife team Nancy and Randall Faber are internationally known as authors of the Piano Adventures� teaching method and over two hundred publications for the piano. They recently founded the Faber Piano Institute in Ann Arbor, MI, where they live with their daughter Vivian. Nancy Faber, who was named "Distinguished Composer of the Year" by the Music Teachers National Association, enjoys a busy schedule of commissions for the concert stage in addition to her educational composing. Recent commissions include "The Snow Queen" for narrator and orchestra, "The Picture My Imagination Has Painted" for Flute Quartet and Piano, and "Trio for Flute, Saxophone and Piano". Her pieces have been heard on U.S. public radio and network television. She studied composition with Joan Tower, William Albright, and British composer Nicholas Maw; piano studies were at the Eastman School and Michigan State University. Randall Faber has toured Korea, Taiwan, Canada and the United Kingdom. He was master teacher for both the World Conference on Piano Pedagogy and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. He gave recitals in St. Louis, Ann Arbor, as Convention Artist for the North Dakota Music Teachers, and performed as Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan, University of Southern Mississippi, Saginaw State University, and numerous universities throughout South Korea. He was featured clinician for the Nebraska Music Teachers, the Florida Music Teachers and the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Convention, and recently presented his research at the 9th International Conference on Motivation in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Faber holds three degrees from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. The Fabers advocate piano study not only for personal expression and performance success, but also as a vehicle for the student's creative and cognitive development. Their philosophy is reflected in their writing, their public appearances, and in their own teaching.

Ordered by accident

I actually ordered this accidentally thinking I was ordering the lesson book--which I highly recommend. This is well done. I just find that I would rather have most of my beginning piano students just concentrate on what is in the lesson book so they can progress faster. It's just me. If you are after a beginning book on piano technique, it's one of the better ones.

This book encourages creativity

I switched to the Faber series based on the Technique and Artistry book. It allows the students to do all manner of ear training and improvisation - allows for much creativity on the part of the teacher AND the student.

Great for older beginners!

I love this method for my older students. The activities are fun and interesting without being too childish, and the pieces are very enjoyable. It provides a nice transition into beginning classical repertoire.

Road-crossing signal operation is properly asymmetrical in response to train direction, and adapts to stopping/reversing. The text encompasses AC and DC powered signals and trains of all gauges, including toy (“high-rail”) layouts, and includes both “common cathode” and “common anode” configurations for DC powered setups. To ensure realism, any substantive dependence on timers is avoided. A wide variety of homebrew and commercial train-sensors is covered, with instructions on DIY alternatives ranging from very simple to ultimate performance. Based on the use of the excellent scale signals that are on the market, the text applies to any combination of DIY and commercial sensor and control hardware. Multiple-block signaling with turnouts, “tumble-down”, and cross-tracks are discussed in detail. The use of the same sensors for automatic track (train or “cab”) control is described for turnaround loops and wyes, for the prevention of following- and opposing-train collisions, and for non-derailing at improperly positioned turnouts. Also covered is the application of these concepts in a Digital Command Control context. DIY Advanced Model Railroad Signaling Electronics assumes a very modest knowledge of electronics, or alternatively, the ability to interpret a schematic diagram and solder simple, highly economical components on a hobbyist’s circuit board. Specific electronic board layouts have been designed for the most important circuits, and commercial sources for the boards – as well as all other components – are provided. The book includes 97 figures and diagrams, and a comprehensive outline of contents.

About the Author
J. Richard (Dick) Kerr holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and is a retired infrared, laser, and avionics systems engineer. He has authored over 60 scientific and engineering papers, and has been granted 10 patents. During his career he has been a professor, Graduate School president, engineering manager, and entrepreneur. Starting with an early childhood interest in model railroading, Dick has been fascinated with the idea of providing truly realistic, automatic signal operation that far exceeds the capabilities of commercially available toy train and scale model commercial units. Having (partially) retired, he has spent much of his time fleshing out these ideas in great detail, including testing on his own model train layouts. Many years have passed since the first motivation for these concepts, and he hopes that their final exposition will bring pleasure to- and stimulate the creativity of – others in this challenging and timeless hobby.

my wife bought me this book, its not for the beginner, you will need to have some electronics experience in how to read a multi meter and have some experience in constructing kits or similar.

Betony is a cool lady!

A very interesting book...I bought it out of curiosity after seeing Betony Vernon in an interview with Dita Von Teese...I'm not completely done reading it yet, However I have enjoyed what I have read so far!...Betony has some interesting stories & information regarding numerous things...If your thinking about buying it...Just buy it!...You never know..You may learn a thing or two!
