Creation science is the target of much attack these days from both within and outside of the orthodox scientific community. This book, however, takes a different approach. It is not an attack on creationism; nor is it a defense. The author's interest is not in creationism at all, but rather, it is in the questions of the role and significance of science in modernity or the public understanding of science. Locke's approach to this issue is a discursive and rhetorical one. Creationism is treated as a case study of the argumentative engagement between science and non-science which--in his view--is as central to the commonsense lifeworld of modernity as much as it is to the lives of its intellectuals. An important dimension of the public meaning of science in modernity is its limits and its relations with other modes of thought and belief, which continue to survive as discourses in the wider culture. Creationism is merely one example of this general feature.

The book begins with a discussion of the current issues in the public understanding of science in relation to traditional sociological views of the impact of science on modernity. This is examined through rationalization and the contrasting view derived from the sociology of scientific knowledge which points to the likelihood of a much more complex and variable relationship than rationalization proposes. It continues with an argument and detailed analysis that focuses on three main points:
*the problem of a competing account of reality (the world), in the form of evolution;
*the problem of competing accounts of the Bible (the Word), in the form of different versions of Christianity; and
*the realization that both of these problems must be managed together in such a way that creationists' own version(s) of the world and of the Word are compatible--a compatibility achieved through a discursive syncretism.

The final chapter brings together the strands of the argument to further develop the implications of the dilemma of science for the public understanding of science through the idea of science as a cultural resource and its possible relation to other such cultural resources within modernity--such as Christianity. It is suggested that much so-called "anti-science" could be made sense of in these terms and proposes further research in this direction.

Don't buy the Kindle edition

No complaints of the book itself, but the Kindle edition of it is bad. The book has a number of tables in it: they are all rotated 90 degrees and in such a low resolution that they are basically just unreadable pixels.

Buy stocks as groceries, not as jewelry.

Edition: I found commentary very useful (though often distracting). If you are not a professional - you'll appreciate the commentaries and epilogue - read it first? It's very inspiring.

Book: "You either get the idea in the first five minutes, or you don't get it at all", commented Warren Buffet in the epilogue. I would add - you don't necessarily need to read all 550 pages, but you must read through the idea of value investing - and it will change your way of looking at the world. I always felt confused and amazed by listening to all the ridiculous fuzz that comes from the Wall Street through TV and the internet. The book explains why.

Several rules of thumbs I noted into my keep:
- Investor buys the business [based on its price/value], speculator buys the stock [based on an absurd believe that he can foresee where the stock price will go].
- The best way to earn adequate return without any trouble whatsoever is to invest into cheap (low maintenance cost) indexes; use dollar averaging (buy every month instead of once at a random point of time) for smoothing the luck involved.
- For enterprising investor (willing to spend much more time), look for a diversified list of bargain issues (at least 30 issues, business values (i.e. net current asset and other related metrics) is below market cap)
- During the bubble, hot industries and companies are getting overpriced. That could only be financed from somewhere. Partially that money are coming from well established old economy companies that lose the appeal. Thus, invest in such old economy companies while bubble grows, as soon as the bubble burst - undervalued companies would rise back.
- Don't ever buy IPOs! (See chapter for compelling arguments)
- Don't consider companies that do not pay dividends. Dividends - money firm pays you for providing capital, they belong to you. They cut a piece for reinvestment - payout ratio. If firm doesn't pay dividends - invest all into growth so you could profit later - that's a speculation. Moreover stock price would be more volatile because it should now rely on future rather than current prospects.
- When gambling - bet on a single chip to maximize the payoff (roulette $1 to $35 payoff at 1/37 chance). When investing - diversify: each investment must have a margin of safety, the more diversified portfolio - the less likely that all will fail. You are a roulette house now who earns with each turn of the wheel.

A ghetto sprayer trying to improve a Michelangelo

I do not think that The Intelligent Investor needs another review, the book's reputation is well established - and well deserved. There is, however, something that has to be said about its modern printing. The revised edition specifically is, I imagine, very much like what you'd get in case you let a ghetto sprayer try to improve a Michelangelo. If you can get your hands on the 4th edition from 1973, the last one written by Graham, go get it. Not only will you get superb financial advice, but also an outstanding piece of literature written by a brilliant mind.

I have no idea who decided that Graham needed a commentary - the book has aged very well, there is only a small amount of information irrelevant to today's markets - but the choice of Zweig was most unfortunate.

Graham reads like a humble, kind man - whose classical education, intelligence and humor show through every line. On the other hand, Zweig's sections offer an irritatingly jarring contrast - he contradicts himself, contradicts Graham, annoyingly cross-references everything, rehashes his mutual funds advice or tells some of his pet stories about the dot.com bubble excesses - again and again. In an illustrative contrast between the two men, while Graham might show what he thinks about a certain Wall Street practice with a sardonic quote from classical literature, Zweig disparages IPOs by showing us how many silly phrases he can think up to stand for the acronym.

Commenting on a work of genius is not easy and it should be done with extreme care, if at all. Someone like Buffett might have succeeded here, but Zweig is hopelessly out of his depth.

This was not intended to be an elaborately illustrated book of Japanese sword masterpieces or museum collections, but more of an easy reference to the methods, materials and tools of Tsukamaki, and a practical starting point for anyone interested in Japanese sword handle repair.�

The book has a brief history of significant changes in Japanese sword design; a guide to setting up a Tsukamaki workshop; and, easy-to-follow illustrations for twenty-five of the more common styles of sword handle design. I also included three case studies on the disassembly, maintenance, repair and/or rebuilding of sword handles, as well as a visual glossary for the identification and understanding of such things as general Japanese sword parts, temper patterns, blade design, terms and definitions, and signature characters.

About the Author
Dr. Thomas Buck has been collecting and studying the Japanese Art Sword for over thirty years, acquiring his first Samurai Sword in October, 1975. In 1987, with the guidance of Dr. W. Y. Takahashi, Sensei, he began a three year intensive study/apprenticeship of the restoration and preservation techniques of John Grimmitt and Takahiro Ichinose, concentrating his research on Tsukamaki and Japanese Lacquer-ware. Since 1988, he has been performing restoration and research work on tsuka for various institutions, private collectors, and dealers.

More than the title implies

Traditional Japanese swordmaking stands among the most refined and complex of arts. In fact, it combines a number of different arts, including that of wrapping the hilt (the "tsuka"). This book covers that craft in enough detail for the determined artisan to put those techniques to use - not necessarily in such warlike manner. The reader finds more than two dozen variations, with surprising details like the use of paper shims to compensate for the thickness of layered bands. There's also a "tear-down" of an antique tsuka being restored by conservators - something very few artisans would be priveleged to see. I fault this part of the book only for lack of clarity in the knotwork that ties off the ends of the wrapping material

More than that, though, Buck gives brief but dense history of the swords themselves, describing how the blades' shape, length, construction, and metallurgy evolved over time. He details different patterns that remain from tempering the edge, and that appear in striations on the tang. Additional details cover signature markings, shape of tsuka, and some of the ornaments on hilt and guard. The author describes tsukamaki itself in a usable level of detail, but brings a lot more to the interested reader, too.

Worth 2x the cost!

Mr. Buck starts with the history of the Nihonto, then moves to many different styles (with great illustrations and explainations) of how to successfully learn Tsukamaki. I wish I'd have had this book a year ago - it would have saved me hours of learning the hard way!

I consider Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner to be the best research-based book ever written in the field of leadership.

What I love about this book is that it is actually written for its readers!

Let's face it--very few readers of business books are CEO's of multi-billion corporations. Yet many business books follow the same over-used formula--interviewing CEOs--talking about what they are doing so well--and suggesting that you do the same thing.

Leadership Challenge is based upon learnings from leaders at all levels--and shows how "regular people" can make a huge, positive difference in their organizations. It is written in a way that can help executives, mid-managers, first-line supervisors, project leaders--and even individual contributors--better understand how they can lead--and be able to immediately apply what they have learned in their work.

My favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz. Three of the movie's main characters are seekers: the scarecrow--who is searching for a brain--or wisdom, the tin man--who is searching for a heart--or compassion, and the lion--who is searching for the nerve--or courage. Narrow focus, but good content and examples.

This book is excellent at providing an organized approach to learning strong leadership techniques and putting them in practice. The "five practices of exemplary leadership" are detailed and very useful. By starting with an easy task, "model the way", it first teaches to stand by values and lead through setting an example. As the book progresses, the practices focus more on moving away from individual leadership and branching out into the team, eventually inspiring other individuals to work on their own. This book's leadership model is very useful and creates sustained leadership. It makes sure that the practices of good leadership will continue even when the original leader is not around.

Perhaps a major weakness of this book is its somewhat narrow focus. Although the book offers countless examples of real-world situations in which the "exemplary practices" made a difference, the examples are mostly business situations. The book seems generally confined to leading in business and turning companies around. Those who wish for specific guidance in other areas of leadership may find another book more useful. However, part of what makes The Leadership Challenge a slightly more convincing book is its use of real-world examples.

I would recommend this book to other students in leadership. Although some may prefer a book that has more diversity in its examples, this book does an excellent job in teaching five foundational practices and their benefits. It offers real life examples that help to move the "exemplary practices" from theoretical to practical. This book is very organized and full of good advice. The book flows in a natural order, starting with personal leadership development and expanding into team building and empowerment. This book offers a great guide to help anyone become a better leader.

Leadership is a concept that can be defined in many different ways. It is very clear that there is no absolute way to learn leadership, nor is there one right way to practice leadership. Good leaders are able to use judgment to determine how to best lead depending on the situation. That being said, The Leadership Challenge definitely offers a convincing strategy to becoming a better leader. It has helped people all across the world, and I believe it will continue to inspire and train others as the years go on. For those who could use advice on how to lead better in their lives, this book is a great tool.

Not so impressed
By Saving for College...
I really wish this book focused more on the development of the person as a leader rather than expecting that the person is already in a leadership role and is now working on those things. I really need a book that works on the growth and development of the person as a leader so they are ready to walk into that leadership role rather than speaking of so many things that they would really only get if they were already in that role. The evaluation is a classic example. Really needs to be geared toward getting someone ready for leadership and helping them to evaluate themselves as a person and as a prospective leader so they know what to work on as they move forward with those goals and dreams in mind of being a leader.

BEST LEADERSHIP BOOK ON THE MARKET

Without a doubt, this is the best leadership book on the market! I have read more than 200 "leadership" books in the past ten years and this is by far the best. It takes real world situations and boils them down into the five areas that the authors state are the basics of leadership. It is not about the GE's of the world but everyday leaders, people you never hear about and how their personal "bests" have proven invaluable as leaders. I read this book annually just to be reenergized and focused as a leader. No leader should be without this book!

I find the Introduction extremely convincing, lucid, learned, fair to past scholarship, and truly illuminating about the meaning of tragedy in general and about the very specific acceptions of hamartia, katharsis, ekpl�xis, and thauma, in the context of an appropriate understanding of the Poetics. Another remarkable feature is the dexterity and ease with which it draws on all the relevant parts of the Aristotelian corpus to shed light on troublesome textual passages in the Poetics. Finally, the style of the Introduction is straightforward, free of unnecessary jargon, direct, and economical, the best interpretation of the Poetics I ever read.

“The translations of Joe Sachs are a great gift to Greekless amateurs like me. He uses simple, unambiguous words joined into sentences that are often complex, as they must be to be accurate, but always clear (after sufficient attention has been paid). A stylist may find some awkwardness in the hyphenated compound words and the noun clauses he prefers to the polysyllabic Latinate words often found in English versions of Aristotle. But these blunt locutions — along with Sachs’ excellent notes — manage to convey both the richness of meaning and the clarity of thought of their Greek antecedents. The resulting translation may strike some as awkward in style, but it will strike the careful reader who cares about what is translated as elegant (in the way mathematicians use that word).”

A Must-Read for Students of Literature

After reading Aristotle's "Poetics," I felt a severe sense of shame for not having read it much, much sooner. As a student of literature, I found that many of the concepts upon which my evaluation of literature are based, whether I picked them up in classes or through amateur theorization, are founded in the "Poetics". The "Poetics," which the Penguin editor Malcolm Heath explains in his outstanding introduction/explication, is probably comprised of lecture notes, and not intentionally meant for public consumption, nonetheless stands as the standard against which literary criticism is gauged. This is amazing, as the work itself is hardly 50 pages long.
Aristotle begins by talking about the origins of art in imitation: Artists convey their sense of the world through imitating what they see and feel around them. This is accomplished both in visual art, and for a more thorough understanding of human events, in poetry. Aristotle goes on to explain the history of literature: how encomium(praises) and invective(curses) give rise respectively to epic and lampoons. These then pave the way for tragedy and comedy. In terms of these basic steps, in the later part of the "Poetics," Aristotle gives definitions to parts of speech, to wit, nouns, verbs, etc., and how they are used in different forms of speech, and in various contexts within the genres he outlines.
Spending the greater part of the work on an investigation of tragedy, Aristotle examines the component parts of what he takes to be the best kinds of tragedies. In terms of quality, the work must be complete, showing the causal relation of events and the causal reactions of characters to those events. It should have a plot wherein a character or characters experience a reversal of fortune or a recognition that leads to the conclusion of that plot.
Plot is essential to Aristotle, and, to appropriate Heath's translation, 'universalizes' the "Poetics" to encompass even those prose works for which Aristotle himself admits to have no definition. We can apply his standards to short stories, novels, and so on. Aristotle's notions of unity, completeness, and magnitude are the conventions to which and against which all Western literature and criticism can be seen to either conform to or struggle against. Without Aristotle's strict definitions of tragedy, comedy, unity, and so on, I can scarcely imagine how we would have notions of mock-tragedy, tragi-comedy, or even the modern or post-modern literary forms. In short, the "Poetics" is absolutely crucial reading for anyone who reads anything.

Penguin Classics: Aristotle's Poetics

I teach a course on Ethics and Aesthetics in Aristotle to graduate students. This translation and its introduction are the best for my purpose. Both are clear, crisp, and readable. The translation is reliable and the endnotes are very helpful. I would highly rcommend this edition to anyone who has a serious interest in either Aristotle or aesthetics that does not rise to a level that requires a reading knowledge of the Greek text.

The earliest textbook for dramatists

The "Poetics" contains Aristotle's observations on what elements and characteristics comprised the best tragedies based on the ones he'd presumably seen or read. He divides "poetry," which could be defined as imitations of human experience, into tragedy, comedy, and epic, and explains the differences between these forms, although comedy is not covered in detail and tragedy gets the most treatment. For one thing, tragedy, he states, seeks to imitate the matters of superior people, while comedy seeks to imitate the matters of inferior people.
To Aristotle, the most important constituent of tragedy is plot, and successful plots require that the sequence of events be necessary (required to happen to advance the story logically and rationally) and probable (likely to happen given the circumstances). Any plot that does not feature such a necessary and probable sequence of events is deemed faulty. Reversals and recognitions are plot devices by which tragedy sways emotions, particularly those that induce "pity and fear," as is astonishment, which is the effect produced when the unexpected happens. He discusses the best kinds of tragic plots, the kinds of characters that are required, and how their fortunes should change over the course of the plot for optimum tragic effect.
With regard to poetic language or "diction," he emphasizes the importance of figurative language (metaphor, analogy) in poetry and the importance of balancing figurative with literal language. It is his opinion that metaphoric invention is a natural ability and not something that can be taught. Of all the poets Aristotle mentions who exemplify the ideals proposed in the "Poetics," Homer draws the most praise.
Malcolm Heath's introduction in the Penguin Classics edition offers some helpful and amusing clarification and commentary on the "Poetics," including a demonstration of the Aristotelian method of constructing a tragedy using the story of Oedipus as an example. A work that is scant in volume but rich in ideas, the "Poetics" demands to be read by all those interested in ancient thought on literature.

A recipe for a healthier and more rewarding life

Having just finished reading this book I must say kudos to the author. It is very well written with an insight into the complexities of "eating right". By understanding how these foods affect our bodies we can then follow the correct path to healthy eating. I for one have never been able to stick to my goals of trying to eat the right kinds of foods in order to live a more healthy lifestyle. Ms. Mayo has now made it easier.

Each chapter gets right to the point. For example, the chapter "Superfoods or Just Plain Food" helps to break down various vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc. and will give you the benefits of each in an easy to read fashion.

I would say sugar is my number one vice and the chapter "Do You Have The Sugar Blues" is an eye opener when it comes to my sugar dependency. It is amazing when you see the amount of sugar that is contained in the foods we eat everyday. The chapter will give natural sweetener options to help reduce your dependency on refined sugar and eventually cut it out completely.

Finally, the author gives you a 4 week plan to follow which includes ideas on what to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Recipes are in abundance here and are easy to follow. There are also daily affirmations for added positive thinking. I for one will be looking to refer to this book often and be more "MIndful" of what I eat and put into my body.

Chapter 1 describes how poppy, cotton seed, soybean, and canola seed oils can be examined with reverse phase high performance thin layer chromatography and viscosity measurements in an attempt to differentiate between them. Continuing with the theme of distinguishing between foods, Chapter 2 discusses the use of ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography accurate mass quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization for analyzing flavonoid-based compounds in onions, for the purpose of varietal identification. Chapter 3 details
the use of high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for quality control and product standardization of the East Asian botanical jiaogulan. In Chapter 4, lanthanide-sensitized luminescence spectrometry is applied to detection of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones in food. Chapter 5 shows how glycemic index may be determined for extruded grains blended with whey protein or cashew pulp. Polymethoxyflavones and derivatives, which occur in citrus fruits, are described in Chapter 6 along with chromatographic techniques for analyzing them. Chapter 7 discusses rheology as a method for looking at characteristics of bioplastics. The book wraps up with three chapters centering on color. Blue pigments, which are scarce in nature, are covered in Chapter 8 along with methods for separating and identifying them. In Chapter 9, resonance Raman spectroscopy was used to identify blue and red forms of anthrocyanins in grapes at various pH levels. A description of color changes in polydiacetylene-based smart packaging, and Raman spectroscopic methods for measuring them, are found in Chapter 10.
