She then explains how to go about designing your own lace projects, looking at different construction methods, putting motifs together and charting out your design. Next up is a comprehensive stitch directory, starting with an at-a-glance stitch selector, and instructions for more than 80 lace stitches. All are charted and most are written out, too. Elizabeth also provides seven projects, including shawls, mitts, socks and a baby set. This excellent book will be treasured by lace knitters who want to try their hand at designing their own unique creations.-The Knitter I love fair-isle and lace knitting, both hailing from Scottish islands. That's not to say I am traditional when it comes to knitting, I like my knitwear to have a contemporary twist. This book looks at Shetland lace - those incredible shawls that are so fine they can pass through a wedding ring. Of course, many knitters these days opt for the quicker, the better, which means chunky yarns and big needles. Yet there is something special about Shetland lace. Intricate, delicate and so fine. I would put the Shetland shawl at the top of my list of accessories every woman should have. It's refined and a true heirloom. Shetland lace patterns can look so complicated, that none but skilled knitters would attempt them, so Elizabeth has set out to show that even novice knitters can. Techniques are clearly shown, with clear step by step instructions and charts. There is a stitch dictionary, so you can design your own items. There are projects too, not just shawls but socks, fingerless gloves and a baby set. I love the Crescent Shawl, but I can't work out the pattern and I have knitted many lace projects in over 40 years. I like the stitch directory and techniques sections and the fact that there are variations on the stitches for the projects. Charts are not always easy to follow, especially when a book closes on itself, it needed to lie flat. I would much have preferred row by row written instructions.-Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts This is one of those rare books which make you feel as if you are at a serious workshop while retaining a friendliness and accessibility which is essential for nervous knitters and newbies. The first section is quite exhaustive. She covers the history of Shetland lace and story of the sheep breeds on the islands, complete with stunning photos and a description of arriving on the plane - 'We bank sharply and lose more height, the runway comes into view, jutting out into the sea, the rolling waves breaking on to the tarmac. We land safely.' All the basics are covered, yarn, needles, knots, reading a chart (a whole page), joining in colours, picking up stitches, dealing with mistakes and dressing lace (blocking). Then she starts advancing a little more and branching out into designing, constructing shapes, charting and putting motifs together. At this point you're thinking 'this is quite awesome, a whole page or two on how to chart my pattern, wow'. But then there are pages on designing with frames, designing a stole, a scarf and a christening gown. Pretty satisfying. I would definitely say all my questions about lace were answered in this section. Next comes the stitch directory which contains around 70 edgings and traditional Shetland motifs displayed very clearly and knitted in beautiful yarn in delicious colours. At the end of the book you get seven patterns to practice your skills, which of course can be knitted in a different lace pattern to the one shown using the stitch directory. Overall I would definitely say this is a fabulous buy if you are a beginner or an intermediate knitter looking for a new challenge. Lace isn't so difficult, and the only thing you may struggle with is reading charts but Elizabeth expected this and solved it with her page on reading charts. For the Intermediate and Experienced Lace Knitter

This is a book for the intermediate or experienced lace knitter. It is primarily a book of techniques and stitch patterns with some projects at the end. The projects are lovely but require a great deal of experience with lace knitting.

The beginning of the book is 'Essential Techniques': Tools and Equipment, Yarn, The Basics, How to Read a Chart, Edges and Seams, Picking Up stitches, Dealing with Mistakes, Dressing Lace, Designing Shetland Lace, and Putting Motifs Together. As is obvious from the titles of the sections, this part of the book focuses on design as well as practical information for the lace knitter. It is not a 'how-to' book of lace knitting. Rather, it assumes that the reader already has quite a bit of experience knitting lace.

The second part of the book is a Stitch Directory which is about 70 pages long. It contains a myriad of different lace stitches and borders as well as steeks. Not all of the stitches are complicated but they do require a knowledge of lace knitting.

Some of the projects are lovely. The cobweb shawl is a project for a master lace knitter but would make anyone proud if they were to knit this pattern. The Hat and Scarf Set is much easier than the shawl but is nothing spectacular. Personally, I would not choose to knit it. The Baby Set is lovely and the pattern offers alternative lace stitches that can be incorporated into the project rather than the one that is demonstrated. This would take a bit of knowledge and math skills. The Crescent Shawl is beautiful but this too requires that one be an experienced lace knitter.

I was disappointed that there were not more projects in the book but am happy that there are so many motifs. I have knit lace before and consider myself an high intermediate knitter. However, I would be very nervous about taking on one of these projects. I wish that more instruction had been included in this book.

Glad I purchased

I debated for a good while whether or not to buy this book. I have over a dozen stitch dictionaries, and thought the stitches in here were probably covered in the books I already own. There are a few, however, I don't think I have seen before. Aside from that, there is a wealth of information in this book that makes it worth every penny, even if you are familiar with the stitch patterns.

There is information on different types of yarn, their pros/cons and items made from that yarn are best suited for. There is a chart with yarn weights and the recommended needle sizes and what items to use those combinations for (for example, worsted/dk yanr on sizes 10-11 needles is good for baby blankets, pillow covers, etc.).

Of course the book also covers basic stitches and materials for knitting. There is also information on edges and seams, working from charts, attaching a lace border, fixing mistakes, blocking, designing, and putting motifs together. Instructions for the stitch patterns are both written and charted - and the charts are larger than you will find in many other books.

The projects in the book are a cobweb shawl, hat and scarf set, shoulder shawl, baby set, fingerless mitts, socks, and a crescent shawl. Some may be disappointed at the small number of patterns, but for me I don't mind. I actually prefer books full of techniques, rather than patterns, because I like to take the techniques from books and design my own items.

I am glad I bought this book, and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a lace book for their library.

Not for Beginners

I hate to give this book 3 stars because it is very well done. However, it was not what I expected. I am new to lace knitting and I was so excited about this book that I pre-ordered it under the assumption that this would be a book of Shetland lace patterns. While there are a few patterns in the back of the book, the main part of the book is dedicated to showing different motifs and edgings, etc to use in designing your own lace patterns. While it does try to take you step by step in designing a lace pattern, I still feel this is way above and beyond my lace knitting and math abilities. I am not interested in designing my own lace. I am very disappointed that there are not more patterns in the book. Again, this book was well done and would be great for someone who wants to make their own designs, but that is not what I had in mind when I ordered this book.

This startling book is based on a series of conversations between the Cuban leader and a Brazilian priest. The talk is informal and far-ranging, and Betto's questions are often provocative ("Does Cuba export revolution?"). Castro expounds on such matters as his Jesuit education, the effect of the revolution on the Church, the discrimination against Christians in Cuba and the teachings of Christ. Castro is inspired at one point to claim that there are "ten thousand more coincidences between Christianity and communism than between Christianity and capitalism," and concludes that Christians and Marxists can work together. As theologian Cox remarks in the introduction, Castro seems to savor the subject of religion far more than might be expected from a self-described atheist. Cox also suggests the possibility that the book may be "a clever gambit by a wily and resourceful politician who knows that he needs to have Christians on his side." In any case, it is a dazzling performance.

This work contains a series of fascinating interviews between a Dominican priest and Fidel Castro focused essentially on Castro's attitudes towards religion and Christianity. As the introduction suggests, the Spanish version of this book caused a sensation in Latin America because an avowed socialist leader has declared that a revolutionary can be a Christian at a time when the issue has been raised explicitly in Nicaragua. The interviews include many insights about Castro's upbringing and philosophy, but Betto fails to press Castro on his regime's human rights abuses in relation to his declarations on religion. Wendell Berry's latest is excellent and provocative in what I have read so far

The books are very interesting. Castro's recollections are interestingly selective and of course entirely favorable to him.
I have not finished Tex Sample's critique of Niebuhr's concepts of Human nature, power and society, so cannot say much except that I expect the critique to be thorough since I am somewhat familiar with Tex Sample's work.
Wendell Berry's latest is excellent and provocative in what I have read so far. But then, that's the way I have found all of Berry's writings. He is provocatively insightful and thought provoking, providing questions and perspectives which we all need to consider very seriously.

Hear Castro talk..and talk..and talk

The translation of a famous discussion between Fidel Castro and one of the major spokesmen of Liberation Theology. The priest seems to worship Fidel more than G-d and offers very little discussion, simply pandering to Castro, agreeing with his every word, and giving him a platform to talk about a wide range of topics. Reads more like 'Fidel's Philosophy'. Fidel isn't exactly the great orator he is supposed to be, judging from reading his speeches, but he does make some nice points that apply to education and religion worldwide. Somewhat recommended. Better than your average fare from Cuba.

A great read, real autobiography, the priest outwitted

As a Leninist, Fidel Castro doesn't believe religion helps, but he also knows that talking with people about religion is a waste of time. What Fidel does here as the bumbling priest wants to explore the glorious of "liberation theology" is Fidel uses it to talk about everything else. Fidel talks a lot about his own experience going to Catholic Schools in Cuba, about education, even about how good playing high school basketball was for his life. Besides being one of the few places where Fidel talks about his own biography, there is a certain joy to this book as Fidel outwits the priest and talks about life, philosophy, education, sports, colonialism, and much more.

Make the decision that your future is going to be different.

I love the specific tips that are given in this book. Sure we all know some of them but seeing them in print, staring at you, makes them easier to put into practice.
Knowing something is not enough. You have to put it into practice to get any good out of it.
I got the title of this review from just one little passage in the book...
***"No matter what you have done or not done in the past, at any time, you can draw a line through your previous life and make the decision that your future is going to be different."***

Two other Tracy books that I also recommend are The 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success and Advanced Selling Strategies: The Proven System of Sales Ideas, Methods, and Techniques Used by Top Salespeople Everywhere. The advice in them and this book can be applied by anybody although the books are mostly aimed for business owners or salesmen .

Just as Dan Kennedy's No BS time management book is mandatory if you want to get the most out of your time, this book is just as powerful when it comes to developing habits to follow throughout your business life.

I'll leave you with one more quote from the book. It is filled with good advice but the following quote should be taken to heart by you.

Tracy teaches time-proven principals of success in business, personal life, and finances. This book contains the habits of self-made millionaires. I wish I'd known many of these bits of wisdom when I started my career decades ago.

Fun Read

Jill Gregory is a new author for me. I am enjoying her books and look forward to reading more of her work. Just a word to clarify something said by another reviewer about the historical accuracy of the novel. In 1806, during the First French Empire, nearly 1/5 of the active nobility of Napoleon's First Empire were of the old nobility. The rest of the titles he made up and many of those titles still exist today. The Regency Era in England was a boisterous time of war, technological advancement and changes in social mores. Bastard children of the nobility in
England were, from time to time, recognized and supported specifically by their noble parent and occasionally legitimized to inherent titles, although that was probably not entirely legal. If they were royal descendants they were often given nominal titles. It was Queen Victoria who banished bastards and absolved fathers from the responsibility of caring for illegitimate offspring....It was the law that bastards were to be supported by their fathers until maybe 1834 or 1835. This perhaps didn't apply to the peerage as the peerage seemed to be exempt from most laws unless the issue was forced in the House of Lords. The Nobility of France and the Nobility of England, while often related through marriage, had a different social structure both in the old system and the system that was created by Napoleon. Being the bastard daughter of a Duke may have been better than being the daughter of a farmer on the British social scale, or maybe not. This is a work of fiction. Even the best works of fiction use situational premise in ways that are....fiction...If you want historical fact beyond the parameters of a story take a history class.

this was excellent!

I don't know when this book was written. It seems like I might have read it before...but oh I would read it again in a heart beat. Great characters. All of them. The madness of the villian was well supported and very convincing. The obtuseness of the hero was irritating but it drove the story line. The leading female character had more wisdom than an 18 year old should rightly have, but it so well written I believed every bit of it. Great story, full of twists and unexpected turns.
Good thing I had my tissues handy, though, because there were parts that made me cry. But most of it I just enjoyed. Very much.

Oh my goodness! I have read works by this author for years and she never fails. Took Forever After with me on vacation in the Bahamas. (Toes curled in the sand kind of read.) This story is heartwarming and wonderful. When I stay up all night and lose sleep, you know the storyteller has a gift. The story centers on an orphan girl with horrible circumstances and is thrust into an Earl's world totally alien from her own. The magic begins when she helps heal his family. Murder, treachery, suspense, action and adventure abound. Don't leave home without it!

The Brutality of Bacon

I was always given to understand that Francis Bacon was notoriously closed-mouthed, especially when it came to his painting technique, unwilling to disclose the origin and meaning of his mysterious and disturbing images. This collection of interviews, however, totally belies that notion, wherever I might have acquired it.

"The Brutality of Fact" is a rich treasure trove gleaned from a series of discussions between the master artist and one of his most perceptive and sympathetic critics. Obviously, this book will therefore be invaluable to those who appreciate Bacon's work, but it is equally invaluable to anyone interested in art, art theory, and the creative process in general.

As an interlocutor, David Sylvester asks the questions you'd want asked; for his part, Bacon is as forthright and forthcoming in answering them as you could hope him to be.

From the images and artists that obsess him to the way he "throws" paint and rubs out images, from the role of chance in both his work and his life to the way he manipulates the accidents he encourages, Bacon seems to be holding nothing back. He speaks plainly of his goal as an artist and what he feels to be the goal of every serious artist: to rework reality by artificial means to create a new vision of the world truer and more intense than anything ever seen before. And he offers an insightful and incisive critique of what he perceives to be the shortcomings of abstract art, which eschews the world of objects altogether, and illustrative realism, which is simply redundant in an era with ample means of mechanical reproduction. His discussion of these two extreme attitudes towards the phenomenal world and his explanation of the way his own art seeks to mediate between the two are in themselves worth the price and time this book costs you to read.

One of the best books by or about an artist that I've ever read, I found myself underlining passage after passage for future reference and inspiration. I don't think it too much to say that "The Brutality of Fact" amounts to a mini-course in modern art by one of it's most profoundly committed and surprisingly eloquent practitioners--a book that will open your eyes in more ways than one.

Still one of the most fascinating books on the nature of creativity ever published.

This is the most recent and expanded edition of the book, which by now has become a classic work that really transcends the "interview with a famous artist" label. I own an earlier edition of the book that I have virtually memorized, so the new additions and expansions David Sylvester has included stand out for me, and amplify the original edition considerably. Whether or not you are a fan of Francis Bacon's painting, the book offers Bacon's insights (as well as Sylvester's) on the very nature of creativity, obsession, and what drives artists of any kind (painter, poet, composer, etc.) to devote their lives to their chosen pursuits. Plus, Bacon's rather sulphurous personality and opinions are captured vividly on the page, through Sylvester's obvious freindship and fascination with the man. An absolutely essential, and rather unique book...over the years, I have been amazed at how many people I have met, from all areas of the arts, who have found this work a source of inspiration and endless fascination.

Invaluable Chronicle of a Tortured Artist

"Interviews with Francis Bacon" (1987) captures remarkably on paper the tortured mind of the famous British painter (1909-1992). It belongs on the shelf of every Bacon fan and artist, regardless of medium. Nine interviews range from 1962 to 1986, Bacon's fifties through his seventies, in the form of interactive conversations with art historian David Sylvester (British, 1924-2001), ranging from Bacon's frustrated youth to his unique artistic techniques, the meaning of art to the meaning of life. Sylvester cleverly steers toward topics Bacon finds interesting, allowing him to discuss them at length. (Some of the original audio may be sampled at BBC4's website, though this book's text was heavily edited and re-manipulated from those recordings.)
The final chapter is the most biographical. Bacon, 77, recaps his life and career in detail, including his "coming out," at a time homosexuality was illegal in Britain, the relationship with his intolerant father coming to an end as a result. Overall, the book forms a clear portrait of an intellectually restless artist, demonized by the struggle to express satisfactorily the horrific images which constantly stream into his head. There is no overarching structure to the book, thus many interviews cover the same ground different ways, with illuminating results. Bacon's answers usually reinforce or embellish what was said earlier, but he sometimes answers the same question differently over time, demonstrated for example by his increasing dislike for "drink and drugs."
Some themes persist throughout. Chronically anxious and hypertensive, he can never sit still, never relax. Not religious, Bacon believes "man is an accident, a futile being, he must play out the game without reason," and life has only whatever meaning we give it, yet his haunted soul clearly identifies with the tragedy of the Crucifixion, which he considers the perfect narrative of the mythic "tragic hero," and the ultimate symbol of human devotion despite life's vicissitudes. (One famous Bacon work metaphorically depicts a hypodermic syringe stuck into the subject's arm, representing a nail stuck into the hand). He is similarly affected by the open-mouthed cry of human agony, which he expresses in perhaps his most famous and retold obsession, the many horrifying studies of Velazquez's portrait of Pope Innocent X.
Too human, he is concerned with posterity, and denies himself the comfort of calling himself a "painter." He believes an artist must "solve the problem" of art to be a success, which to him means they must render the known through the unknown, or create the "illustrative" and "narrative" through the use of the "irrational." Discussing Picasso in this light, he says he finds surrealism "more real" than realism, probably meaning he finds surrealism more directly communicates the human condition. He also believes strongly in figuration, slaying abstract art with one devastating word: "Fashion!" He seems burdened by a lack of proper training, having started his career as an interior designer, especially when discussing the trials of his studio work, describing the way he tosses paint at the canvas, the way he tries not to work a canvas too much, potentially ruining it, and the conflicted feelings he holds toward works he has already painted, or those he is still painting.
The book usefully reproduces many works in small black-and-white images at times when the conversation turns to them, both Bacon's works and those of others, like Picasso and Rembrandt. The lack of color is entirely unnoticed, as the book focuses on the artist's psychology and opinion, which these plates illustrate perfectly. (Full-color reproduction would probably also have made the book needlessly expensive). Most remarkably, of all the photographs and self-portraits in the book, Bacon never looks directly at the viewer, illustrating most strikingly his natural over-sensitivity and tortured self-denial.
Bacon has said "art is completely a game by which man distracts himself," and "the artist must really deepen the game in order to be worth anything at all." If anyone feels Bacon "played the game" well, and "distracts" successfully his audience, or that he was "worth anything at all," then this book belongs in that person's library.

Awesome book! A must read for those who want to hear that God loves us and wants us well.

I loved this book because it's all about God using ordinary people who love Him to touch and heal others and bring them to Jesus. Aliss has so inspired me to continue contending for the gift of healing and prophecy. Since I started reading her book, I have prayed with several people and God has healed them. PTL!!

The start of something wonderful!

What marvelous true stories about a modern day Azusa St! The power and mercy of God are demonstrated almost everyday in this small cafe in England. Without fanfare and in great humility and love of others, Aliss Cresswell is bringing Christ's healing to the downtrodden in this part of England. With the healing miracles, a hunger for Christ is released into those healed, starting them on a new path of victory and purpose. How like God to demonstrate His power through those not famous or worldly successful! This is just a start of what God is planning to do in the nations.

Robert Gilpin is a Princeton University professor emeritus and author of The Political Economy of International Relations (1987), a landmark in the field of international political economy. The world has changed much in the 14 years since that work appeared. The cold war has ended; few vestiges of communism remain. Advances in technology have increased the interdependence of national economies, and regional economic cooperation has blossomed. Meanwhile, the information economy has risen. Originally Gilpin intended to issue a second edition of his classic treatise, but he found world changes too dramatic and his own ideas so different that a "wholly new book" on the subject was warranted, which he has prepared with the assistance of a coauthor. Two years ago, he wrote The Challenge of Global Capitalism: The World Economy in the 21st Century (2000) to describe the current state of the world economy. Global Political Economy complements that work and replaces Gilpin's earlier text by providing the scholarly, theoretical framework for examining how markets and the policies of nation-states determine the way the world economy functions. Will not put you to sleep

Perhaps the best resource I had to prep me for the economic portions of my Masters Degree capstone test in International Relations. This book gives you the down and dirty in a way that is entertaining. A must have.

A Valuable Introduction to International Political Economy

Robert Gilpin's Global Political Economy: Understanding the International Economic Order delivers what it promises by giving readers an understanding of economic relations among nations. Essentially, it is an introduction to the discipline of political economy, a survey of economic developments since World War II, and an analysis of the theories that compete to explain these developments. As an introduction to the field, it is both accessible and comprehensive, but extensive footnotes and a select bibliography provide resources for advanced students.

Gilpin begins with a rather pessimistic assessment of his colleagues: economists, he says, have a suite of highly developed analytical methods and theoretical models that are seldom applicable. Political scientists, on the other hand, rely essentially on intuition that is seldom informed by theory. Political economy, of course, is an attempt to move past these limitations. Political economists tend to study powerful economic actors who can influence prices. Realists, like Gilpin, focus especially on state actors while recognizing the increasing influence of global investors, multinational corporations, and NGOs. Political economists would take particular note that economies are embedded in social and political systems where the purposes of economic activity are decided. One society may use its wealth to build a fairly egalitarian welfare state; another might use it to develop military might, and a third might concentrate wealth in the hands of a small elite.

One of the striking features of the international economy is that "free trade has historically been the exception and protection the rule," even though the benefits of free trade have persuasive theoretical and empirical support. Trade liberalization increases domestic competition, thus increasing efficiency and consumer choice. It increases both domestic and global wealth through the gains from specialization, and it encourages the diffusion of new technology throughout the world. Gilpin cites several reasons why, in the light of these benefits, protectionist ideologies usually hold sway. First, while the principle of comparative advantage tells us that both parties to an exchange will benefit, one party may benefit more than the other, and nations can and do worry about relative benefits. Second, economists support the use of protection for infant industries that can later become competitive. Unfortunately, there is no way other than trial and error to identify these future winners, and temporary protection often becomes permanent. Third, trade benefits do not accrue to all members of a society equally. Fourth, trade creates interdependencies between nations, while nations try to preserve their autonomy and freedom of action.

Gilpin examines the problem of uneven development and, in particular, asks what role the state might play in accelerating development. After an extended discussion of the debate over the "development state," Gilpin concludes that states have an important role to play. Development requires a transformation of society, and states can facilitate that transformation by investing in the health and education of their citizens, socializing them, and providing public goods like physical infrastructure and economic institutions. There is also evidence that government investment in research and development has positive effects for domestic industry.

Gilpin also describes the "machinery" of the international monetary and finance system in detail. All but the most expert of readers will find some new information here.

I have to say that I enjoyed this book tremendously. Gilpin has an exciting story to tell, and he writes clearly, with a degree of elegance of expression and restraint.
