Okay for the background

I really wanted to like this book, as I have other math and science books in the Demystified/Dummies series. But the book is just not a good introduction to QM. It is terribly organized, FILLED with typos (which stand out to even a QM novice like me) and dotted with random concepts with no background or proper explanation. If you want to start learning QM, and all you have is this book to start, I recommend brushing up on basic calculus and linear algebra first, and then reading the chapters in this order (applies to first edition):

1 for a quick introduction to the background of QM
4-8 for the math needed to do QM, Dirac notation and the postulates. Good explanations of matrix diagonalization and the characteristic polynomial.
11 now that you know Dirac notation, learn about spin states
2 don’t get bogged down here…just get a feel for wavefunctions
3,9,10,12 Come back to these later once you have a better grasp (from other books) of the Schrodinger equations, harmonic oscillators, angular momentum, etc. The one good thing here is that most examples are completely calculated out.

This Book is Gold

There are books that you hope will help you and books that actually do. If you are serious about teaching yourself quantum mechanics "Quantum Mechanics Demystified" by David McMahon is a must-have. The book is concise clear and he does a good job of explaining the reasons behind what's going on. I will say you do need the undergrad math preparation in matrices and differential equations however. Hence I suspect, some of the lower star ratings. Dirac notation and density matrices are what I have been interested in learning. How many texts out there do a thorough job of getting you started with density matrices and their interpretation? Not many. Blum might be an example. Shankar? Forget it. McMahon gives just the right amount of hand holding to enable you to crack open these types of abstract ideas. There are numerous helpful examples. As a result, I am finally "getting it" at long last. The text does have a lot of typos, but there are lists of errata online to help you out. McMahon, I praise you for ability to explain this challenging kind of material. My original quantum mechanics prof by comparison seems clueless.

A lot of reviews spend too much time on errors--yes but not a crippler. It's the advanced algebra and calculus that takes time to go through--- the quantum stuff is not too hard at all.

Not good & need a good basis in chemistry

It is not meant for someone who has had little general chemistry as the description implies. I have a B.S. so I've had plenty of chemistry; however, because of that I don't see how someone who's had little would easily understand many of the concepts in this book. Also, many of the figures, graphs and such are misleading, i.e. size discrepancies that make concentrations appear opposite of what they are. There are also mistakes as well, so perhaps the next edition will be better.

Mostly good arrangements of all songs from '25'

In general, this book is about what you would expect: it contains piano transcriptions of every song from 25, along with the vocal line and guitar chords. Like much of Adele's music, most songs on this album are quite piano-heavy, so I had high hopes for the transcriptions being authentic. Mostly, this is true. For example, "All I Ask" is absolutely beautiful and sounds almost spot-on to the album recording. It is my favorite piece from both the album and this book, and you won't be disappointed with it. "When We Were Young" is decent, but when the album recording has both the piano and bass, the transcription in this book has only the piano part--you're missing the little bass runs that I think make the song a bit more exciting (and, no matter how stunningly performed the song may be, the instrumentals are very simple and you can probably do just as good as this transcription just by looking at the chord progression and faking it if you don't care about the bass; I was able to find a transcription I liked better as a digital download on a well-known online sheet music store). Finally, her first hit from the album, "Hello," is quite poorly transcribed if you're just looking for the accompaniment: on this piece, they decided to put the melody into the piano part. It's mostly easy ignore if you're a capable enough player to filter it out, but to play it like that requires more effort and ruins what could have otherwise been a great transcription of a beautiful song. Finally, there are a couple songs that just don't work as well on the piano (ones without a prominent piano part in the album itself), but I wasn't as interested in those anyway.

I'm deducting one star for the aforementioned reasons: some otherwise good transcriptions are mysteriously missing something that would make them more authentic, and some "accompaniment" lines are transcribed with the melody (but at least the whole book doesn't consistently do that). In general, the book is well done, and it does include all songs from the album with reasonably good transcriptions of most of them.

Note to the publishers: Please let us look inside the book before we buy! It's so hard to judge if the music is at your level before even looking at it. I'm disappointed that many of these songs are a bit above my intermediate skill level. I would have easily known that by looking through the pages for 2 minutes.

The easiest songs to play are "Sweetest Devotion" in the key of C, and "Send my Love" in the key of D. If you are like me, and aren't going to spend a lot of time practicing the more difficult songs, I would buy those separately.

The arrangements were done in a way that an intermediate player such as myself could enjoy the music, though I believe an advanced player would enjoy the songs as well. Though I can't say I'm a rabid fan to the point of buying concert tickets in the first 10 minutes before they're sold out, I do appreciate the beauty of her music, and this another way that I'm able to enjoy it.
