interesting

If you don't mind the endless, and just plain old puerile, Christophobic hate speech then this is an interesting read. He was most definitely a talented artist as well as being very adept at a sort of stream of consciousness prose, which I really dig. And he makes some deep points from time to time.. but ya gotta really dig for it, and often times step wayyyy back from it, in order to really see(if that were possible) whats going on and how it is relevant for your own life. My only qualms is his obvious vicious hatred for other religions.. live and let live... until they physically don't let you.. and at that point the deal is off.

This is the best book on Amazon of Spare's written work

This is the best book on Amazon of Spare's written work. Phil Baker's biography is a masterpiece and should be read either at the same time as Ethos or before. There are a couple of other "collected works" of Spare's on Amazon but they're poorly produced Createspace jobs. Ethos is a must for anyone interested in Spare.

History, romance and magnificent horses…sigh!

I opened this book and from the first page was transported to the New South Wales Hunter Valley in the mid nineteenth century. If you are a lover of horses and have experienced the magic of the Melbourne Cup, this is a world you’ll want to be lost in. This is the story of India Kilhampton - a strong, independent woman who has been given one year to turn the failing family property into a thriving horse stud. Her dream is to breed a Melbourne Cup winner. When she advertises for a horse breeder, and Jim Mawgan presents himself for work, she is faced with the answer to all her dreams and the destruction of everything she knows. The tangled web of intrigue that Mawgan begins to unravel with his presence turns India’s world upside down and sends her heart spinning out of control.

I love that this author’s historical stories are all set in and around where she lives. It brings the books to life. Tea Cooper’s descriptions of the area are so vivid, I find I am no longer a reader holding a book, but I’m walking the property, Helligen, with her, picturing the buildings, smelling the leather and seeing the glossy coats of the horses. Her visceral description of the magnificent thoroughbred, Jefferson, made him linger in my mind long after I closed the book. The author’s secondary characters were powerful and complex, adding humour, mystery and authenticity to the story and balance to the protagonists. And Jim Mawgan was the consummate hero – strong, defiant, loyal but also flawed enough to be believable and, of course, extremely desirable. Loved this book!

An intriguing read that had a hornets nest of activity between the Kilhampton/Cobb families set on the Helligen farm. India and Jim carried the story well and the many secondary cast of characters add their dimension to what shaped up to be an enjoyable read, with the evident attraction between India and Jim and the tale surrounding both families. The descriptives of Jefferson were awesome and his part in the story was a highlight :) Jim and India's boundless attraction was oftentimes sweet and portrayed well and formed a perfect picture for this reader. Lots of emotional elements throughout the read that this reader relished. Author T�a Cooper writes such stunning characters in many of her novels and The Horse Thief held its own for a potent read. Strong characters, a stunning backdrop and fabulous story combined for a great read.

A beautiful and interesting story

India wants to bring her family's country home back to its former glory. Helligen Stud used to be so active and vibrant and India misses those days. To make her wish come true she has to show her father she's capable of running the estate and he's given her a deadline. She wants their horses to matter again and to achieve that she plans to win the Melbourne Cup. To be able to do that she needs a capable stable master. When Jim applies for the job it's like a dream come true, India's wishes might be fulfilled. Only Jim is carrying a secret, one that has everything to do with the troubled past of both of their families. When things go horribly wrong will they be able to save the situation and each other?

The Horse Thief is an amazing book about a beautiful home that has a sad history. Even though Jim and India don't know exactly what happened in the past they have to deal with the consequences of the problems between their parents. I loved the theme and the way Tea Cooper handles the secret, giving up a little bit every time. I also really liked the setting, which is amazing. I'm a big fan of books about animals and The Horse Thief doesn't disappoint in that area. The descriptions of the horses are fantastic and I enjoyed reading about their characters.

The romantic part of the story is very good. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to India. Her sister is a spoiled brat and she tries to make India marry an older man in the city so she can have her lifestyle and status back. This leads to a lot of friction, which I found really interesting. The cover of The Horse Thief is as beautiful as the story. I liked it a lot. It was fun to read about the past, to discover how people used to live back then. The connection between India and Jim is great. There are a lot of spectacular moments and I loved the ending. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

A great overview of contempory gay spiritual thought

Having owned this book since the first edition came out, I was dumbfounded when I saw there were no reviews of it. I admit to some bias here since I know the author personally, but it is the best summary of current gay thinking on gay spirituality. The thrust of the book is that we gays are different in fundamental ways from straights. One of the most significant is our search for meaning outside of the instinct of perpetuating the species through the family. And when St. Paul kicks you out of church, you start seeking answers outside of conventional wisdom. All gays and lesbians should be acquainted with those who have struggled with finding those answers. Highly recommended

About the Author
Anna Mauranen is Professor of English at the University of Helsinki. Her current major research interests are English as a lingua franca, corpus linguistics, and modelling spoken language. Her publications focus on spoken language, corpus linguistics, contrastive rhetoric, translation, and academic discourses. She is director of the ELFA project, which has compiled a 1-million word corpus of academic ELF. Publications include: Linear Unit Grammar with Sinclair (John Benjamins 2006), Translation Universals - Do They Exist? with Kujamaki (John Benjamins 2004), Academic Writing. Intercultural and Textual Issues with Ventola (John Benjamins 1996) and Cultural Differences in Academic Rhetoric (Peter Lang 1993). Elina Ranta is a researcher in the ELFA (English as a Lingua Franca in Academic Settings) project at the University of Tampere. Her main research interests include English as a lingua franca, language variation and change, and English language teaching. Her current research focuses on syntactic features in spoken ELF, on which she has published the article 'The 'Attractive Progressive - Why Use the - ing Form in English as a Lingua Franca' (2006). She has also published on teachers' and students' perceptions of English in secondary education in 'English in the Real World vs. English at School - Finnish English Teachers' and Students' Views' (2009).

The stars are not for the recipes

If you are looking for a good French cookbook, do not start here. I have two dozen that go ahead of this one. But for literature, Pomiane's little book gets the other three stars. I use it firstly for entertainment, secondly for cultural history, and finally for ideas and inspiration. He was Polish, and therefore had a much higher appreciation for his adoptive country. He was a serious, highly respected chef and wrote a number of excellent books on cooking. I have never followed a recipe in this book as written in these fifteen years. Although you could.

He writes for a world short in duration and long past already. He wrote for that post war era when the young French were living a new life style that began to spell doom for the beret and the bistro both. How to keep with tradition when the new bosses were emulating America with the one hour lunch and twelve hour days? He tried to grasp at the last trappings of civility here. In the 10 minute cook, sounding like all those really terrible business books, the 10 minute fill-in-the-blankety-blank, his voice somehow comes through and you learn only by osmosis.

This is as tiny a book as the time is short. I read it on trains or planes. Now I will find some of his mainstream books, most probably in French. Now I know why M.F.K. Fisher called it amazingly useful. It helps like playing opera when cooking.

In this volume, I have chosen to focus on the disorders of lipid metabolism at a level appropriate both for medical students and for graduate and undergradu� ate students majoring in the biological sciences. The biochemistry, nutrition, genetics, and cell biology aspects of lipids and lipid metabolism will be covered as they relate to lipid disorders. I am not aware of any textbook that integrates the disorders of lipid metabolism in this manner. Chapter 1 includes a brief discussion of the basic structures, properties, and metabolism of lipids. This chapter is not very detailed, since the material covered is available in basic textbooks on biochemistry. The major fpcus of this volume is the various lipid disorders, with emphasis on polyunsaturated fatty acids, the molecular biology and pathogenesis of the hyperlipidemias, dietary and drug therapy for the hyperlipidemias, and alcohol-induced liver damage. The material presented has been obtained from several textbooks on biochemistry and from a variety of recent articles in the scientific literature.

Incredibly insightful, very thorough book, worth every penny. This is more than just a textbook; it should have been called a reference book. You will find yourself looking back upon this innumerable times. A very technical work, it is not an "easy read" for someone outside this field, but certainly understandable to those professionals and students familiar with biological sciences.

Love this series!

Belle Day accepts a job as a live-in physical therapist to the daughter of Cage Buchanan. Cage suffered a loss in his past and has held a grudge against Belle's family for years. Having someone he considered the enemy under his roof bothered him..especially when where he really wanted her, was in his bedroom.....I was excited to hear that this was being released. Fans of the Men of the Double C series fell in love with the Clay family, which Belle became a member of when her mother married Squire Clay. This book was wonderfully written and was not lacking in any way. My biggest dissapointment is the only Clays mentioned by name, besides Squire, were Tristan and Sawyer. The best books written in this series were the stories of Jefferson, Matthew and Daniel, and not to see these characters mentioned by name was dissapointing. Although this book is not in the same league as "Stay", it is a worthy addition to this series and a must read.

The story of Belle Day and Cage Buchanan was, well, a bit meh... Take it or leave it, really. I have to say, so far the post-'Men of the Double C' series by Allison Leigh has not lived up to the first five books. Seems to be going through the motions at this stage.
No spoilers: I liked Belle - she has problems and unresolved issues but she's taken those emotions and channeled them into becoming an underpaid therapist (aka good heart, little superannuation). Recently the subject of scandal, she's fled her day job to go work with Cage Buchanan's daughter out on a ranch somewhere near the Double C. The process by which this arrangement has been organised is never explained to my satisfaction; but whatever, this is a romance novel, so I'm prepared to suspend my disbelief. Anyway, so Cage was quite annoying. He's got major issues with Belle's family, with his ex-wife (who's depicted as pure caricature of evil, grasping, non-maternal ex-wife), with relating to his daughter, with the nearby townsfolk, with everyone. The only thing that saves him is that he's hawt, apparently. Luckily, he's able to get over all of his considerable emotional problems and social interaction dysfunctions by falling in love...
So, in the end, 'home on the ranch' was OK, not fab, not terrible. If you're wanting to find out what happens to all of the Clay family (and extended family) members, then read it, you get to see the rest of the family briefly, including Squire, Belle's mum, Clay sons, etc.

One of the stand-out reads of my life

I was in my early teens and devouring everything I could read and I don't know why I chose this book, but it has been in the top-5 of my personal list for close to forty years.

At the time, I had not read anything from a European author let alone a Frenchman, but this book revealed that a well structured and told story was not the sole purvue of English. I was engaged from the first page and read through the day and night until I had finished. The ending was both exciting and unexpected (at least, by a naive young boy). The details of the story have stayed with me so well that I was greatly disappointed by Holywood's later visual interpretation in "Planet of the Apes." After a long hiatus, I can look back at both the book and the movie and understand the differences and the strengths of each. But for me, the original story will always be the more powerful because of the author's talent and skills, and because to this day the effect it had on me has not diminished.

I strongly recommend this to any reader, but especially to afficionados of SciFi. I will be surprised if you too do not rank it at the top your list of favourites along with Bester's best works (especially, "Tiger!Tiger!" - aka "The Stars My Destination"), Asimov's "I, Robot", Larry Niven's "A Gift from Earth", Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", Jack London's "Before Adam" and anything by Philip K Dick.

If you have children, please encourage them to experience for themselves a simple tale of 'humanity' well told.

A Sci Fi Necessity

Any fan of S/F stories has to read 'Monkey Planet'. Its influence, especially through the 'ape' franchise, is evident in all subsequent S/F media. As a stand alone novel, it is a thought provoking and emotional story that unfolds through the reading of message in a bottle. What prevents it from getting four stars is the feeling that it has lost some shine in translation. A personal feeling backed up by no fact whatsoever. A book you have no choice in reading but you will enjoy greatly regardless.
