About the Author
Peter B. Moyle is coauthor of Fishes: An Introduction to Ichthyology (1988). He is Professor of Fisheries Biology at the University of California, Davis. Chris Mari van Dyck, who trained as a fish biologist, is a professional illustrator living in McAllen, Texas.

Superb Overview of Fish and Their Habitats

This book is a relatively easy read for those new to or continuing their education of the piscine. The classes of fish get a brief overview, and then each water environment and its citizens get a nice explanation. Each chapter ends in a few suggestions for pursuing first hand experience by studying fish in local or vacation sites.
I have stumbled through the "Fishes of the World," which has highly technical descriptions of the fish families, and found this a much easier read as well as a good top level review. The illustrations are are mostly nice drawings, with additional color illustrations of some specific fish environments. There are also nice graphs illustrating fish environments and showing relative populations of fishes found in those environments.
As the preface states, this is a book for those interested in fish who are not trained ichthyologists. My thanks to the author's wife, who pointed out that the original text was boring, because the revamp is much, much better and not boring.

I bought this book as an alternative to buying it in a school's bookstore and saved about $40. It's in great condition. The cover was a bit beat up but the pages were fine and the book's spine was as if it was brand new. For used it is in a very good condition.
