Nolite emere!
By A. Bril
This is a truly dreadful recording. There is nothing remotely conversational about it: the pronunciation is forced, artificial, abounding in false vowel values, too slow, and repellent with its undisguised American twang. The rolling of 'r's is excessive and typical of an Anglo-Saxon trying to sound Italianate. There is no attempt to string the words together as in natural conversation, but each of the words is separated artificially as if speaking to a person hard of hearing or to someone suffering mental retardation. I particularly missed that lilt and bounce that one expects from the mother of all Romance languages. I was hoping to use this CD with students -- what a disappointment! None of the readers can pronounce Latin properly. If you want to hear Latin pronounced in a more authentic fashion, listen to Wilfrid Stroh, Miraglia, or the actor who plays the grown up Quintus talking to King Cogidubnus in the Cambridge Latin Course DVD II. Don't waste your money on this rubbish: it will corrupt, not improve your conversation!

Klaatu barada nikto
By Pentel
To Mark Miner, whose insulting sarcasm wasn't wasted, at least not on this reviewer: Bril has it just about right: "...the pronunciation is forced, artificial, abounding in false vowel values, too slow, and repellent with its undisguised American twang. The rolling of 'r's is excessive and typical of an Anglo-Saxon trying to sound Italianate. There is no attempt to string the words together as in natural conversation, but each of the words is separated artificially as if speaking to a person hard of hearing or to someone suffering mental retardation. I particularly missed that lilt and bounce that one expects from the mother of all Romance languages..." What Bril is saying, and what you are apparently too busy taking offense with to consider, is that there is an ease with which a native speaker speaks his native language--any language--which any perceptive native speaker of any language should be able to appreciate, which is lacking in this recording, and which wouldn't be lacking if you had made up your mind how you wanted your Latin to sound, and had your reader practice it that way. So, there are no native Latin speakers left from which to learn authentic Latin pronunciation? Wonderful! That leaves you all the artistic license in the world then to decide how you want your Latin to sound. If Mel Gibson can do it, you can do it. To help sharpen your ear to the stiltedness we're talking about, listen to those ridiculous grade B cowboys and Indians movies of the '50's and '60's in which the Indians are made to speak fake Indian talk: "How! Ugg!", or to the space man language spoken by "Klaatu" in the "50's sci-fi movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still": "Klaatu barada nikto". Your Latin does sound like an American speaking bad Italian. It sounds that way at the beginning of the recording, and it sounds that way at the end. Have a listen to Mel Gibson's "The Passion". It might inspire you to make a convincing recording.

Pay attention
By ctmb374
I'm new to Latin. I purchased this book/CD based on the reviews I've read. So far, it's been great. I have completed the first CD and about to start the second. The only thing is, you really have to pay attention. I would recommend this to anyone trying to learn Latin.
