In 1996 Danish cyclist Bjarne Riis won the Tour de France. Eleven years later he called a press conference and confessed to taking EPO on the way to achieving the ultimate cycling triumph.
In RIIS, his sensational autobiography – already an acclaimed bestseller in Denmark and Germany – the notoriously private Dane bares his soul. From the shy eight-year-old who fell in love with cycling to the champion cyclist turned banned substance user, and finally the Team Saxo Bank owner determined to deliver a ‘clean’ Tour de France winner.
Brutally honest and as furiously fast-paced as one of his breakaways from the peloton, RIIS reveals a reflective man who doesn’t shy away from the darker episodes of his life and is resolved to learn from his mistakes.

Review
It is very rare to find such a well told and honest biography as this one, where the main character fearlessly sacrifices himself. Politiken, January 2012 "A very exciting and captivating read." B.T.

A Cyclist in the Spotlight
By Lilli
It has to be difficult for someone in the public eye to write a revealing autobiography. The tendency would be to make yourself look better than you are or to do as many do, enhance your weaknesses in a tell all manner as though they were to be applauded. Mr. Riis has managed not to fall into either pit. The book provides great insight into the interactions of cyclists behind the scenes where ordinary mortals cannot go, thoughtfully examines his behaviour there and is honest about what he finds. I learned a lot.

Self-Serving Tripe
By Matthew W
The language is childish but you can forgive that of a guy that is probably on his 3rd language, and it does seem like he wrote it. In 2007 he came out and said he doped in his 96' tour win. Good for him but he failed to mention a word about it in his chapter about the 96' tour. Instead he credits his win to having smaller gears that made it look like he was effortlessly pushing the bigger front gear. Seriously Bjarne? It had nothing to do with EPO and testosterone? He claims that as a team owner he has never allowed doping and would fire any one suspected of it. Well Tyler Hamilton and others have said Riis made blood transfusions mandatory. Read Hamilton's book instead. Its a full confessional that still has good insight on the racing as well. Its not a collection of whining over riders leaving for other teams, Its not naive.

excellent book - aptly named

Very interesting autobiography about Bjarne Riis, both as a racer and team manager. You can truly hear Riis' voice in the text (say if you've watched the film "Overcoming" about his team). It gives a great sense of the man, his accomplishments and the challenges he faced, and how he dealt with them. This book has an authentic voice and compelling emotion because Bjarne was honest about his history.
While Riis does not shy away from his doping, certainly some will say he should have woven it deeper throughout the portions about his racing days. As it is, he covers most of it in two chapters -- one about his doping as a racer and the second about his famous press conference admission. He admits it and takes personal responsibility for his choices, but it did leave me wanting a bit more. My take is he primarily omitted details to avoid implicating others; while I respect that choice, I would have liked more discussion of (admittedly Bjarne's perception) of the peloton point of view on doping, both in his time as a racer and how it has evolved to the present. I got the same impression with the gradual evolution of his team's anti-doping stance and programs (which were/are pretty strong). As opposed to Jonathan Vaughters and Team Garmin's "moral" stance; at times it seemed like Bjarne & CSC/Saxo Bank had a more practical motivation of protecting the team he envisioned and built.
If I had to guess (argh, I actually do since he did not come out an say it), I would say Riis also took this approach to doping because like most pro cyclist his stand is that -- however real the problem was/is -- cycling is bigger and more beautiful than doping. Not only do I sympathize with the truth of that view, I also know from reading lots of CycleSport magazine articles that a myopic focus on only that topic can get pretty tedious, pretty quick! If you look back at the 90s and the rampant drug use, it was in fact an level playing field (regrettably so!). So in the end, Bjarne does a very good job capturing that sporting essence during both phases (rider and manager).
The final aspect of the book is Bjarne's emotional conflict and turmoil. In my point of view, despite our desire to envision them as soft, cuddly stuffed animals, great champions -- almost by definition -- are driven figures. Riis lays out the emotional demons and turmoil that drove him to great accomplishments and at times to clinical (my term not his) depression. He opened up quite a bit through out the book, my only wish is that Bjarne was not so taciturn. While that too -- I think -- is a true reflection of the man, it left me wanting to be able follow up and press him on episodes to explore their meaning.
That aspect left me torn between rating it as a four or five star book. Regardless, I enjoyed it and highly recommend the book. Maybe in the end, it is that lingering unanswered tension will give the book staying power, just like the stages of dark enabled Bjarne's ones of light!
