About the Author

Chris Holcomb is an associate professor of English at the University of South Carolina, where he teaches rhetoric and composition. His previous publications include Mirth Making: The Rhetorical Discourse on Jesting in Early Modern England and several articles on style and performance.

M. Jimmie Killingsworth is a professor and head of the English department at Texas A&M University, where he teaches American literature and rhetoric. His recent publications include Appeals in Modern Rhetoric: An Ordinary-Language Approach and The Cambridge Introduction to Walt Whitman.

I tend to steer clear of explicit instructions about grammar or style. Reasons for this are twofold: (1) I understand that you can't teach these things decontextually, and (2) I've never felt secure enough in my own grammatical or stylistic abilities to deliberately take the time out to teach them explicitly.

This book solves both issues. It provides a nice refresher/primer for those of us who implicitly *know* grammar or style without possessing the discipline-specific language necessary to talk about how we know what we know. It also treats style as that which is performed. All suggestions, examples, and explanations or rhetorically-grounded.

I highly recommend this book either for a class (i.e. my advanced prose students) or as a more practical, rhetorically-aware alternative to something like Strunk & White.

So impressed with the activities in this book!

If you have a child or grandchild ages 8 to 12 or 13, buy this book. Buy it now. This is a wonderful way to encourage your child to do some fun and sometimes educational activities in those "I'm bored" times. The 101 activities are very diversified -- from "learn how to use chopsticks" to "paint like a famous artist" to "spin a basketball on your fingetip". Just a wonderful variety with specific instructions. There are sports themed tasks, cooking, physical, mental, artistic, mathematical, and just plain fun. I plan on giving this book to my 9 year old grandson when he visits. Some tasks we will do together, some he can do on his own. It's just a wonderful book and I plan on spreading the word about this to all my parent and grandparent friends. Do your child a favor - buy this today!

“101 Things to Do Before You Grow Up” is exactly what you need when your hear the all too familiar refrain “I’m bored, what can I do?” Laura Dower has compiled a group of 101 activities that should provide children/grandchildren with a wide variety of choices that will meet almost any interest they may have. A colorful cardboard jacket covers the spiral-bound pages of the book. The book lies flat when opened.

From astronomy – “go stargazing!” to aerodynamics – “launch a plastic-bag parachute”, from historic preservation – “make a time capsule” to developing an unusual skill – “learn to juggle three objects”, from fostering an interest in becoming multi-lingual – “count to ten in five different languages” to science – “tell time without a clock”, and more, this book provides activities for a wide range of ages.

Few of the 101 choices require objects or materials not commonly found in the home. Cost for materials is minimal, yet the entertainment value of these activities is great. Clear, step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. Not only do some of the activities have educational aspects – e.g. “learn to read music”, many impart valuable life-skills – e.g. learning to tie three common knots.

I liked that there was a list of required materials given when the activity required them. Tips for making appropriate choices, safety tips, and informational factoids enhanced different activity selections. A banner at the end of an activity provided space for the date it was completed and a “square” in which a small sticker could be placed.

“101 Things to Do Before You Grow Up” is a wonderful book that will engage your children/grandchildren and will entertain them as they work to complete an activity. There are choices that are appropriate for children as young as five-years old and others that are appropriate for ‘tweens. In this era of electronic toys and on-line entertainment, “101 Things to Do Before You Grow Up” is a refreshing return to simpler, but equally entertaining activities.

What a Wonderful Idea! Great as a Gift

This is such a great idea! I'm sure if we all sat down we could, over time, come up with a long list of fun things for kids to do in their (ample) spare time. But why do that when this book is already available. It is super cute with a hard cover and a lay-flat wire coil spine. The spine makes it great for keeping the book open as reference when trying something out.

The pages are really colorful and illustrated and all of the tasks are in simple and short steps - most of them fitting on one page. Some tasks might take a few hours, other just a minute or two. Perfect for the range of attention span for some days.

I really like the check off at the bottom of each page. There is a box for checking off or filling in DONE with a spot for the date completed. Many items can be done solo but many are fun group/family/one-on-one activities.

My daughter is excited to get through as much as possible.

This is also a great idea for a birthday gift. In fact, I may just get a few to stash in the 'birthday closet'!

This is the definitive gaff rig text.

If you're only buying one book on gaff rig, this should be it. Full of useful information, supported with many practical diagrams (not all of them original,) it is a first-class resource for anyone contemplating building a gaffer, or converting from a different rig.
Note that this book is described by the publisher as an "extended" 3rd edition of the book originally published in two editions under the title "Gaff Rig". I am not clear how much additional information has been included in this new edition, but the change in title indicates that there might be considerable differences between this "Handbook" and the two earlier "Gaff Rigs."

The Best Resource on the Gaff Rig

Leather's book is probably the best resource on the Gaff Rig that I have seen yet. Great text, clear illustrations, and quite a bit of information not found elsewhere makes this my favorite of the books I've reviewed. While Leather is a Brit, he does have quite a bit of info on American gaffers as well, including a chapter on the fishing schooners of New England. Each major component of the gaff rig is treated with a chapter (Mast and Spars, Running Rigging, Standing Rigging, etc.) and then adaptations for several specific types of boats (catboats, sloops, cutters, smacks, yawls, schooners, etc.)

The methods presented include shortcuts and conveniences not included in the initial publications and the techniques are described in a context that allows comparisons to other related methodologies. Methodologies are laid out in a manner that stresses their general applicability and reports their potential limitations. This volume provides a substantial and current overview of the extant methodology in the field and a view of its rapid development.

About the Author
P. Michael Conn is the Senior Vice President for Research and Associate Provost, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He is The Robert C. Kimbrough, Professor of Internal Medicine and Cell Biology/Biochemistry. He was previously Director of Research Advocacy and Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology, Cell Biology and Development and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Oregon Health and Science University and Senior Scientist of the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). He served for twelve years as Special Assistant to the President and Associate Director of the ONPRC. After receiving a B.S. degree and teaching certification from the University of Michigan (1971), a M.S. from North Carolina State University (1973), and a Ph.D. degree from Baylor College of Medicine (1976), Conn did a fellowship at the NIH, then joined the faculty in the Department of Pharmacology, Duke University Medical Center where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1982. In 1984, he became Professor and Head of Pharmacology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, a position he held for eleven years. Conn is known for his research in the area of the cellular and molecular basis of action of gonadotropin releasing hormone action in the pituitary and therapeutic approaches that restore misfolded proteins to function. His work has led to drugs that have benefitted humans and animals. Most recently, he has identified a new class of drugs, pharmacoperones, which act by regulating the intracellular trafficking of receptors, enzymes and ion channels. He has authored or co-authored over 350 publications in this area and written or edited over 200 books, including texts in neurosciences, molecular biology and endocrinology. Conn has served as the editor of many professional journals and book series (Endocrinology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Endocrine, Methods, Progress in Molecular Biology and Translational Science and Contemporary Endocrinology). Conn served on the National Board of Medical Examiners, including two years as chairman of the reproduction and endocrinology committee. The work of his laboratory has been recognized with a MERIT award from the NIH, the J.J. Abel Award of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Weitzman, Oppenheimer and Ingbar Awards of the Endocrine Society, the National Science Medal of Mexico (the Miguel Aleman Prize) and the Stevenson Award of Canada. He is the recipient of the Oregon State Award for Discovery, the Media Award of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and was named a distinguished Alumnus of Baylor College of Medicine in 2012. Conn is a previous member of Council for the American Society for Cell Biology and the Endocrine Society and is a prior President of the Endocrine Society, during which time he founded the Hormone Foundation and worked with political leadership to heighten the public’s awareness of diabetes. Conn’s students and fellows have gone on to become leaders in industry and academia. He is an elected member of the Mexican Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the co-author of The Animal Research War (2008) and many articles for the public and academic community on the value of animal research and the dangers posed by animal extremism. His op/eds have appeared in The Washington Post, The LA Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Des Moines Register, and elsewhere. Conn consults with organizations that are influenced by animal extremism and with universities and companies facing challenges from these groups.

Gavin Long is a businessman, pastor, and theologian. While establishing a career as a mergers and acquisitions professional, he and his wife Emily and their children have joined in ministry with other families in northern Virginia to rediscover the Redemptive Story in home, community, and work life.

Seeing the Redemptive Story

I was pleased to receive in the mail this wonderful Liturgical Guide from Parclete Press by Gavin Long. The look of the book is very appealing with its imitation leather cover and beautiful cross imprint on the front. To be honest, I was a little curious about what I might find in this liturgical guide. I knew from study that every church whether high or low church in worship has a liturgy. I was pleased to note in the introduction Long expresses part of his goal in saying, "Celebrating the redemptive story in our homes requiresa balance of creativity and catholicity" (8). In describing the creativity and catholicity of practicing liturgy at home, Long is speaking of the continuing conversation we have with God and with others, including their expressions of worship and gifts. The goal is not to narrow the focus to a select few but to create an environment where people are able to bring their lives before Christ. I do also really appreciate Long's insistence that it is the redemptive story that should shape our liturgy. Throughout this book, I was saying to myself, 'Yes, that's it,' as I saw how he combined the Old Testament and the New to bring the unity of the message of Christ.

What else did I think was very good in this liturgical guide? Theologically, Long was careful to tell the redemptive story highlighting the Trinitarian foundation of salvation. In the Opening of Sabbath for Advent, Long yses children's responses to highlight that the coming of Jesus was part of God's plan and done by the power of the Holy Spirit. We get a grand sense of the filial love and connectedness that each person of the Trinity has for another and this in turn leads us to worship. Secondly, I think Long did a great job at mentioning some key aspects of Christology that sometimes go unmentioned. He says on the same page through the leader's words, "This Advent season, we anticipate the birth of the King, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World and the fulfillment of all of God's promises" (18). Seeing Jesus as King brings us to a sense of awe and wonder as we serve him as obedient subjects or servants. Through the incarnation, death, resurrection, asencsion, Jesus is exalted as King over all creation and redefines what it means to be king here on earth as well.

I also thought that the prayers of the week were very appropriate for the liturgy of the week and were drawn from both ancient and modern voices of the church. I really appreciated the prayers from the Orthodox church, both Russian and Eastern. These prayers highlighted some aspects of the ministry and life of Jesus that I don't usually meditate upon. Overall, I thought that the liturgical guide was both very practical for adults and children and brings out a sense of the holiness and nearness of God. Lastly, I think that this guide helps us practically retell the story of the Bible, from Creation to Consummation in a way that helps us remember and store in our hearts the message of redemption and renewal that is not to be missed. We have too long read the same passages in the same way without taking the stories and message to heart in the context of a worshipping community.

On a more practical note, I was glad to see that Long decided to include prayers that were both long and short, centered on the biblical story and our story. Sometimes liturgy can move into rote receciation that has no room for creativity, and I think Long did a good job at aiming to stay in line with the biblical story while being creative in his approach. For all that was said prior, the biggest part of this liturgical guide for me was that it allowed me and my family to worship God in a more intimate way, realizing that we need God just as much for the rain for our crops as we do as our Savior.

Awesome resource

I am so happy, as an evangelical Christian, to have a resource like this. The book gives me SO much information about our Christian heritage that, for so long, was known only to the Jewish people and scholars.
