Yet for all of their efforts, Hutton and Castle did not establish a tradition of historical swordsmanship that survived their own generation. Instead, their books and essays were largely forgotten until the second revival of ancient swordplay in the late 20th century, and today's researchers often view these early efforts with a cavalier or dismissive eye. In Ancient Swordplay: the Revival of Elizabethan Swordplay in Victorian England, 19th-century martial arts scholar, theatrical fight director and martial artist Tony Wolf reexamines Hutton and Castle's work, both through their own words and those of their enthusiasts, students and critics. About the Author
New Zealand citizen and US resident Tony Wolf has spent more than thirty-five years in an international career blending the martial and the creative arts. He has authored or edited nine books and numerous articles for journals, anthologies, websites and encyclopedias. His script for the one-act play Satisfaction tied for first place in the 2006 Joining Sword and Pen international playwriting competition. Tony's fight choreography and action design have been featured in more than two hundred stage, screen and video game productions, including cultural fighting styles design for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A pioneer of motion capture action design, he was also instrumental in the revival of Bartitsu, a mixed martial art created at the turn of the twentieth century.

Essential for the bookshelf of fencers and historical fencers

This is a much overdue study of the first 'modern' revival of historical European martial arts, which happened in the late-Victorian and Edwardian period.
Whilst there have been many books in recent years dedicated to the earliest documented European martial arts, from the medieval period, what has been neglected is a published study of the first people who sought to revive and recreate these ancient martial arts; the likes of Captain Alfred Hutton, Egerton Castle and their contemporaries.
Without these chaps we probably wouldn't have some of the ancient sources we do today, as they collected and documented so many of the manuscripts and books that survive in libraries and archives now. Beyond this, they also wrote about their views on these ancient texts, which gives us a unique view into their views of fencing and martial arts in general.
This book is quite narrow in its scope, but also quite in-depth and exacting for it. It is not a big book, but covers what needs to be covered. It will contain some interesting new bits of information for just about any student of fencing history. It is written in plain English and sets out the subjects in a logical and easily consumed manner.
My only criticisms would be that it is quite pricey for its size and availability outside the USA is not great.
Highly recommended for anybody interested in the history of fencing.
