I wrote this book for people who prefer plain-English explanations of how things work. You won’t find much math in this book. No formulas. No mumbo-jumbo. What you will find are simple words of ordinary conversation, and a lot of very easy-to-follow drawings relating to hydronic radiant heating. There are also stories – lots of them! I like to tell stories about the things I’ve seen as I’ve traveled around the US, Canada and Europe, looking at hydronic radiant installations. I’ve seen installers do things the right way and the wrong way, and I learned from them all. I dug into old books as well as the current literature to write this one, and I did my very best to boil down the engineering into understandable terms. This book contains 215 pages of practical, common sense information that you can use right away. I’ve made lots of analogies to things you already know. Hydronic radiant heating doesn’t have to be complicated or spooky. There are rules of thumb that work, and installers are using them with great success every day. There are simple ways to install and control these systems. I’ll show you how. All in all, you’re going to find straight answers to direct questions in this book. I’ve done my best to present a subject that I love in a way that I think you will find both informative and very enjoyable.

Takes the first 10 years off your learning curve
By Doug McCartney
With this book and the additional one recommended (see the comments for the name) you have the design information in your hands that you need to get a system properly installed - I'm basing my first on these two books. This book covers basic concepts, fundamental design, and the field engineering that every project requires. There's detailed explanations of how to design wood flooring systems to work with a sub-floor hydronic heating system from the smallest element of installation; similar treatment for concrete floors too. Although circulating hot water isn't rocket science there are specific process and control engineering design elements that experience has taught are necessary - that information is in this book and is why I think it will "take the first 10 years off your learning curve."

I found the information in the book rather dated and the photos of installations of poor quality. Information was good but almost the entire book was based on using boilers which doesn't match my intended system design.

Not just for installers
By Polycarp
The book sets its target audience as installers, but I think this is also a great book for home owners considering adding hydronic heat. The sad truth is that in the US (with a couple of exceptions), hydronic is simply not popular. The consequence is that many installers do not really understand hydronic heating and many have tailored their business to deliver systems at the lowest cost. These can result in compromising the system in ways that leave the home owner with a less efficient and less effective heating system.
As we've gotten bids for a hydronic installation, we've gotten the hard sell on a new forced air system and been told fairy-tales about the way hydronic heat works. It was great to have the fundamentals from this book to keep from being taken for a ride.
The book covers the fundamentals of hydronic heat with clarity and wit. It's a pleasant read, not just an informative one. I read half the book in one sitting. It includes the fundamental parts of a hydronic heating system, different variations of design, comments on materials, and a little bit of history.
The one failing of the book is that it doesn't cover modern modulating-condensing boilers. These have a significant design impact (actually making things easier in some ways), and it would be really useful to get the same level of information about them as the book has about everything else. I would almost give the book five stars even with this piece missing, but that is the only reason for my four star rating. Hopefully Dan will do an update soon and include this advancement.
